they don't make music that sounds anything like either of those bands yeah and this is just terrible people taking shots at each other at this point
It's whatever I guess. Maybe it'll click at some point. Personally I don't know how if I brought the band up and someone said 'oh, I listened to that podcast, he said some gross stuff and laughed at some inappropriate humor' and I'm supposed to defend it with a 'it's just a bit, he's trolling, haha, do your research, he's actually a really cool dude and nothing he ever says is serious'. I don't know... Whole thing is weird and backwards with how this site normally approaches the news of celebrities saying offensive things. I guess I'll either 'get' the persona/performance aspect of it or not.
I frankly don’t care about people saying offensive shit more often than not (there are limits, nothing matty has said approaches that limit imo) so not sure where that whole charge is coming from. I have no problems dropping my favorite bands of all time like brand new and dance Gavin dance when actual bad shit comes out about them
I also find it hard to get upset about matty laughing at other peoples comments when a band like dance Gavin dance is still booking tours, as one example of actual really dangerous people in positions of power not being held accountable. I know someone’s gonna say “you can care about two things at once” but the gap between the circumstances is so ridiculously wide it’s genuinely shocking to me how much unfiltered hate matty generates from some really mild shit and being far from an actual danger to people
I agree and have dropped DgD, and they were my number 1 spotify of all time and I have not listened to them at all this year, and I am waiting for the day another band in my top 5 bumps them down a spot (which looks most likely to be FOALS or ironically, the 1975). I had not listened to anything with Johnny for years, and was enjoying Kurt's and Tilians albums, and since the accusations against Tilian came out, I quit listening altogether. No merch wearing, no spotify plays, nothing. I think the difference is that you got Tilian's account and the victims account, and some people are always going to favor the side of their favorite artist if there's no definitive evidence and/or legal trial, and spin it to 'well, HE said it was consensual and none of us where there and if he was guilty he'd be in jail sooooo...'. I believe the victims accounts, and am no longer comfortable supporting DgD, but it's the sad reality that most people accused are able to continue operating in this industry under that distorted logic. I sort of get what you're trying to say, but I don't really see the comparison and why you brought up DgD. One is the old age old tale of accusers (victims) and deniers, and shitty fans taking the side of their idol, and the other is someone on a podcast saying things on record for all to hear in which the individual gets to decide if they're comfortable with it or not. I don't see the need to compare them and say 'well if DgD can still tour, I don't see the point in holding someone accountable for their words'. However, I think the important distinction though is where you draw the line and you said Matty hasn't crossed that line in your opinion so it's a moot point anyway.
I bring up dgd because you’re the one who acts like different bands are held to different standards. DGD was my most listened to band for years (recent years mind you) by far and I had no problem dropping them the second some real horrible shit came out about tilian that warranted it. it’s not hypocritical to think some things are worth the outrage and some things like what matty has done simply are not. that’s why I brought them up.
People who are fans of someone can have more context than a cancellation headline. Also it can be hard to drop a “fandom” if it’s been a slow trickle of little things versus a legitimate assault/abuse allegation.
I know the accountability thread is where were meant to capture a wide-ranging spectrum of issues, from hurtful behavior to predatory/dangerous allegations, but I beg some of you to take the nepo baby less seriously. We’re going on a decade now of him trying to come off as the edgy frontman.
My wife says he is racist, but not like that kind of racist. We listen to other problematic artists who’ve thought and done worse, but we don’t really like them like the 1975. Matty is kinda like Doja Cat. It is very gross for my wife especially gross cause she is reminded of white British men who she has been around have those kind of fantasies on black women. Kinda sorta but not really like this guy:
All I would say is.. please do some research before you believe any cancellation headline tweet you see from a Harry Styles Stan account on twitter
I would say I did the research by listening to what was said, and I think he crossed a line imo (so I'm not just going off of a stan account cancellation tweet). I would also say that if it was an artist people in here didn't like, and the headline was essentially the same, it'd be 'wow, they're gross' and the discussion would be over and that would be the end of it. I'm just questioning the lack of objectivity, and find it weird how peoples lines change depending on how much they like the music or the art. But that's just an opinion. If you're honest about that not being case, who am I to question that? It also has nothing to do with Taylor Swift and I don't even really like her persona or her music. I was in here weeks ago arguing when the podcast dropped that it was a shitty look, and just essentially got told 'lol that's cum town babyy'. The article really just boils down to this below and the fact that there can be a collective agreement on whether it's a 1 or 2. Case in point DgD was brought up. The majority opinion is we should all take stance 2 but sure, you can take stance 1, we'll just judge you now. Depending on where you go online, and the echo chamber you're in, the 'collective' stance changes for this situation. To me, when an artist I like has done or said something I don't agree with, my course of action as a fan sort of follows one of a couple paths: I can accept the person making the art isn't me and move along enjoying art I love for what it is. It taints my experience with the art to the point that it's not fulfilling for me to experience it anymore.
