So what's going on with Matty and this band now in general? I have tried googling it, but it goes so deep into a rabbit hole of fandom that I just get lost. Something about being offensive on a podcast, but then it being okay because it's part of it being Matty's whole schtick, and people saying you had to be a fan since day 1 to get it. But then other people saying it's an incel podcast and he's alienated all their women fans. I have no idea. I don't like to involve myself in a lot of 'permanently online' type drama, but anything of substance here that I should be aware of?
It’s hard to follow but I thought it was a podcast hosted by a gay couple but I’ve never listened so I wouldn’t know.
I know they’re young but how is any of it surprising. Listening to it I don’t think he’s saying anything crazy, especially by his standards. He’s literally been kissing young (legal) fans at shows. It’s not exactly classy.
See this is where I get lost. I have no idea wtf cum town is, who D*SHA is, what Matty has said in previous interviews, who Ross is, what the TAFS podcast is etc etc. I just really enjoy their music and live show but going down that tweet thread is just levels and levels of what and who?
The way I've looked at is that I don't have the capacity to go down that rabbit hole and if something truly shitty comes out (which this could still be), I'll learn of it.
I looked up the subreddit megathread about this and I only started understanding a portion of the context once, deep in the comments, someone started explaining the dirtbag left. I still feel confused, but you may start from here? Seem like one of those "if you know, you know" things I'm completely out of the loop on.
all I can say as someone who knows all about this stuff is good luck to the fans of rock band the 1975 in their quest to parse intentions here
He definitely said and participated in speech that others would be eaten alive over. I was looking for the context to understand if its an act or not, and where the line is. I think a lot of what was in the podcast, at face value, is at the very least in poor taste. Just trying to get a little more background and understanding on the peformance/satirical aspect, as it seems like lads banter that went a bit too far, and that normally gets you in trouble.
I am once again begging for examples of others who have been eaten alive for the stuff matty has done
There are plenty of comedians on here who are essentially cancelled or at least regarded in poor form to talk about and it's their job to make jokes and be controversial. Yet a musician on a podcast where Scottish is referred to as 'Retard English', incorrectly labelling someone's Ethnicity multiple times, and then poor impressions of various cultures is all fun and games? I'm not trying to persuade anyone or get my pitch fork out and scream 'CANCEL HIM!', I'm simply just asking what the difference is in Mattys case. I get the whole 'I say dirtbag things but I'm aware of it and it's on purpose' sort of schtick, but not fully enough to comfortably just brush aside some of the comments as 'performance art'. I only waded in to ask about the podcast and understand if it's stylized banter where they're in on being offensive, or if it was really just a room of people chatting where some in poor tastes jokes were made. I don't know, think what you will as it's hypothetical I guess. I'm just trying to get a better understanding of the situation and the noise around it. It seemed like a big deal as I follow them on IG and every comment on the tour announcement was 'shame on you', 'you're announcing this now?', 'you're going to lose your entire fanbase' etc etc.
Also considering I’ve been listening to Nick Mullen and Adam Friedland for years at this point I can assure you I have not cancelled any comedians for the same stuff matty said Plus doesn’t the last part of your post literally prove people are eating matty alive for this? What are you even trying to say?
If you go back up, I waded in here because I was a little confused as there seemed to be infighting about his comments on their twitter and instagram feeds. There were those that were offended and said they were disappointed and ready to stop listening, and others that said in response 'you just don't get it, it's just Matty's schitck, day 1 fans are loving it and laughing at it' etc. Then there were tweets about discovering cumtown, someone dating D*SHA etc. and I just found the whole thing a little confusing without any context of what the podcast was, or who the players were. I was asking for that context. Now it's died down on their feeds, and I'm not seeing much about it in the negative, except in some news articles. On face value, he participated in and laughed at some pretty crumby, unfunny, and in poor taste/offensive stuff. The type of stuff that I'd expect to see widely damned in the accountability thread. If you want concrete examples, just google for examples of celebrities who have had to apologize for mocking Asian accents or for using the r word. There are plenty of them. Again, I'm not saying cancel! I just wanted context on what fans were fighting about when some people were shocked, and others were like 'Mattys gonna Matty' and he's 'aware of what he said was offensive'. You can cancel or not cancel, and laugh at whatever comedians and podcasts you want to laugh at. It's been debated plenty of times in here before about the things Matty has done that others have claimed would get them in trouble. I just wanted context of this particular case (mainly about the type of podcast it was, and how self aware of its perceived offensive it is). It's all good. I'm going to continue listening to them, I'm not going to discover cumtown or start listening to this podcast, and on I continue.
I’m just so exhausted from TikTok discourse and apology culture. If someone does something truly bad, let me know. If he’s just being a prat on a podcast, it’s only the millionth time haha. He’s done and said enough good things in the band’s tenure for me to know he has good intentions. How anyone takes him seriously outside of that is beyond me.
