I really enjoy the lyrics and even the back half of the song when it opens up with that dope riff, but the whole LCD thing and slightly buried lyrics is meh to me. I think I’d like POTB and Wintering better if I didn’t have a similar issue with the vocal.
Liking the lyrics/vocals on this entire thing a lot. I know Matty said he was making an album about love, but digging in even a bit more than that, I think it chronicles the up-and-down of a relationship as well as anything I can think of (with some of Matty's miscellaneous commentary mixed in as usual). You get the beginnings/"honeymoon phase" where it's hard to be apart with Happiness/Oh Caroline/I'm in Love With You, and then things start to take a downturn in All I Need To Hear, and you get the breakup/aftermath in About You/When We Are Together
agreed with the general sentiment but i don’t think “oh caroline” is a honeymoon phase song i like that even the straightforward love songs have a doubting nature, every line in “happiness” feels like it has a twin meaning e.g. “i’m never gonna love again”
I genuinely think Jack as a producer is one of the greatest artists of the era. (I also love Bleachers but won’t necessarily say those 3 albums are all-timers). He does have a style/vibe, but within it he’s so relentlessly creative/innovative
I think that sometimes but then he produces an album like Sling which puts me to sleep when I listen to it lol
Jack had a hot run until Reputation and has been a little up and down since then. Sling and Solar Power are super boring, but he did good on this album!
A producer’s job is to bring things out in the artists they work with and enhance what’s there, but they’re also dependent on the material they work with. If Clairo brought a boring set of songs, there’s only so much a producer can do with it. That’s the nature of the gig. (I’m not saying she wrote boring songs btw. I haven’t heard the record yet)
Solar Power sounds amazing. And it’s exactly the album Lorde clearly wanted to make. People need to properly understand the producer’s role, I feel like.
think my top three is When We Are Together, Part of the Band, All I Need to Hear but they're all immaculate
By not thinking any of the songs sound like bleachers. Sure, both have 80s influences, but they come at it from such different directions that I’m surprised this would even be controversial
