Hard to think of more, if any, songs like Happiness where the title and the feeling I get from them match up 100%
I think Oh Caroline, Happiness, I'm In Love are my favourite tracks But every song on this is an absolute crusher and something that could easily compete for my favourite on any given day. So it's hard so say this early on. All I know is I've loved this band forever, and this album is something special
Jesus Christ “Part of the Band” is SOMETHING. Just when you wonder if they’ve played every card they have
And then god DAMN IT “Oh Caroline”. The first time they’ve actually managed to channel the actual ‘80s rather than a cool neon idea of the ‘80s (which, to be clear, I also loved)
the 1975, happiness, part of the band, oh Caroline, withering, I’m in love with you, and about you are all tied for first place lol
Particularly now that I know from the track-by-track that it's a breakup song, "The only time I feel I might get better is when we are together" cuts fucking deep. That line is really hitting me currently.
I liked Part of the Band when it was released but it’s absolutely essential 1975 now especially in context of the album
Man they really have a Justin Vernon-esque knack for working really interesting droning notes and little glitches and experimental flourishes around the edges of very emotionally satisfying chord structures. At the root, they may not be reinventing the wheel. But Christ they redesign it to look fucking stylish. To me the best frontier of music: how to find new ways to present and enhance and arrange songs that are melodic, memorable, and emotionally poignant
the guitars in the chorus of "oh caroline" call back to "settle down" big time, which has always been one of their best songs
Current favorite little detail (among many): the “yeah yeah yeah” backing vocal on “I’m in Love with You”
Could connect this to She's American too. I'm sure someone has brought this up before, but I've always liked the symmetry of Settle Down/Robbers and She's American/Change of Heart on the first 2 records. Two different takes on the same pair of ideas
Camping in Vermont, listening tonight when I go to sleep then hiking through the foliage with it in the morning, intro starts this off so strong, instant classic song
I have always said that they fit right alongside Bon Iver and everything JV does. It helps they have BJ Burton working alongside them and other Dirty Hit artists but it’s undeniable that JV is an influence on them.
The one thing that’s been sticking in my head as I listen to this deliciously lush 80s-esque album… “A millennial that baby-boomers like”
