When I was a kid I had a humuhumunukunukuapua’a and it was very sweet and would come to the surface to get pet but one day it was just gone. Found it dead a couple days behind the tank. Homie jumped out I guess lol

I know we had a huge tank that had the betta, one of those catfish that sucks on the glass, and neon tetras in it, but I don't remember what other kinds (if any) we had in there.

sometimes the filters eat fish and you never even know unless you look through the filter for a skeleton.

Ok, here’s a good animal story from when I was young.

When I was like 5 I had a turtle named Chip. He got his namesake from the fact that he has a triangular chip in the tail end of his shell. I was an idiot and didn’t understand how oxygen worked I guess and in an effort to help my homie out I took out one of the fish from his tank to kill it. Figured it would be easier for him to eat. But (and here’s where I’m an idiot) I thought that covering the fish with a cup would suffocate it faster...as if it wasn’t already suffocating lol.

Anyways, that’s just an aside. The main point is that eventually my parents decided I wasn’t capable of caring for Chip properly which, in hindsight, I’m like DUH!!! I was 5!!!! Whatever. So I have to get rid of Chip. Rather than selling it or giving it away, my dad puts it in a large brown paper bag and we drive to Petco and put it in the tank with the rest of the turtles :crylaugh:. I came back like a week later and he was still there and definitely recognized us cause he came swimming right over. But I just love that out of nowhere they just had an extra full grown turtle in their inventory. Like, how did they explain that!? Haha.

holy shit. that's hilarious (the putting it in a tank at petco part), not the fish murdering psycho 5 year old part.

and I'm the bad pet owner.

Hey man, those fish weren’t pets. I also had a snake and fed him live mice. It’s totally different

you might even argue that I'm the best pet owner. I mean, killing animals so my pet could eat? That's love.

As a turtle owner, that part about it swimming up to the tank when it recognized you breaks my heart

Yeah. My current roommate owns a red eared slider (same as Chip) and they are pretty smart. At first he was super cautious but now whenever I come home he swims over to me and pokes his head out of the tank as high as he can

did you pre-kill the mice for it? no, because it's the snakes job. also in my research people who owned snakes as pets as a kid end up being psychopaths.

well, when he was a baby I had to buy baby frozen mice. Once he was older he ate live mice and no, I didn't kill them, but I also wasn't 5 lol. And it was just the one time!
