It's been a great run for Muchova, but she's going to have to pull off a miracle to make this interesting with Swiatek.
Muchova shows tremendous mettle to force a third set. Unbelievable turnaround. I do worry she expended too much energy trying to close out that second set, but Iga's play is dipping a bit.
Iga raised her game when it mattered most and Muchova understandably let the nerves get to her. Great match.
Ruud raised his game from the start of the match and then Novak basically sucked the life out of him. Casper did his best to hang in there, but it's clear Novak is still miles ahead of everyone else and I don't see that changing--barring health-- for quite some time. I'm sure Alcaraz learned a few things from his match with him, but I think it will take some time. Kinda joking here but Novak better watch out for this guy lurking in the shadows...
Got to wonder if Murray would have picked up one or two more grand slams if he hadn’t had his hip issues. Still impressed he can walk, let alone win a match, let alone win a tournament.
Wilmbledon is upon us! Sadly, the men's draw just feels like a foregone conclusion with Novak coming out on top. I would love to see Murray make a deep run. On the American side, I'm going to root hard for Chris Eubanks who won his first career title yesterday in Mallorca. On the women's side, it is vastly more open as to who can win. Swiatek has a favorable draw. I imagine Sabalenka is chomping at the bit after not being able to play last year. A sneaky first-round matchup is Coco vs. Sofia Kenin. I know Kenin's form is way off from a few years ago, but she loves playing the spoiler and who better to do it against than the next American phenom.
Despite the hour-long rain delay, it was a fun first day at Wimbledon. As I mentioned, Kenin-Gauff proved to be a great matchup with Kenin coming out on top. The Gauff forehand is such a liability and her opponents know it. Not much notable happened on the men's side other than two great five-set matches. Nakashima was looking great in the first two sets and then just faded down the stretch against Jordan Thompson. An injured Felix Auger-Aliassime loses to Michael Mmoh. I really hope we see Felix make it to a Grand Slam final one day, but he is trending downwards.
Haven't been able to watch any of the tournament these past couple days. Of course, the days I had off earlier this week happened to be the same days they had weather delays. Hoping to watch a bunch this weekend. Nice to see Chris Eubanks get a couple big wins on this kind of stage. On the women's side, Swiatek looks quite good though will face a stiff test in Bencic.
Really happy to see him getting all of this attention. What a run. A very humble and articulate guy who will do very well in broadcasting once his career is over, though he does some broadcasting currently. More importantly, he has a matchup set with Medvedev who will not be afraid of Chris's serve. I do think Chris has a chance if the match goes to five sets.
Yes, records are there to be broken but Djokovic winning the same number of Wimbledon titles as Federer doesn't feel right. I really hope he loses.
I don't think Carlos will freak out and start cramping like he did last time against Novak. It will still be an uphill climb. I just hope it's competitive because the semifinals today were quite disappointing.
Man, Ons looks horrible right now. Don't have a problem with Marketa winning but would like to see Ons give a good fight after several disappointments.
Congrats to Marketa. Her plan was cold-blooded and executed to perfection. Really impressed by how efficient her movement was in tracking down balls. She curtailed any momentum Ons had going in the second set by not giving up anything easy to her. Worried by how much scar tissue this will have for Ons. It does seem like she is cursed.
