I guess I do too, but that also means that Nick Kyrgios would be a grand slam winner and I just don't know if I could accept that reality

it's probably going to be the only final/semifinal of his career where novak is potentially a crowd favorite

kyrgios has no real chance and I could definitely see him phoning it in if he gets down a set and a break

gotta watch to see if kyrgios does something truly dumb/hilarious though

Well… so far Kyrgios is playing very well and up a break in the first. However, Djokovic has about 3 gears he usually can move up during a match.

  5. I’m surprised how well Kyrgios is playing so far

yeah I gotta give him credit for how he's played this fourth set. thought he was going to give up and he didn't.

He played way better than I thought he would

    hmmm

That was pretty close to Kyrgios's best tennis. He got a big performance out of his serve, as he needed to – 74% first serves in, 30 aces.

And he still lost in four.

Sorry this is post all over the place.

Kyrgios did well. Thought his runners up speech at the end was really good too.

I think unfortunately the periods where Kyrgios got distracted are where Djokovic was able to take advantage.

Considering Kyrgios is playing without a coach, it’s incredible how he is doing. If only he could get someone to harness his potential he could take advantage of the big 3 potentially approaching their decline.

Also read a story from his mum published yesterday that she that she thanked Andy Murray for highlighting self harm on kyrios when they trained together a few years ago.

    Possibly the worst take ever?

Yeah, forget the covid backdrop to the message there but I don’t think Djokovic has transcended sport in any way really.

well he has in serbia at least, for better or worse

certainly the comparison is way off though

Djokovic the person is the reason we’re not all calling Djokovic the tennis player the GOAT. So I think that’s why he’ll never transcend

"I started playing tennis with the goal of winning the U.S. Open. I didn’t think past that. And then I just kept winning. I remember when I passed Martina Hingis’s grand slam count. Then Seles’s. And then I tied Billie Jean King, who is such an inspiration for me because of how she has pioneered gender equality in all sports. Then it was climbing over the Chris Evert–Martina Navratilova mountain. There are people who say I’m not the GOAT because I didn’t pass Margaret Court’s record of 24 grand slam titles, which she achieved before the “open era” that began in 1968. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want that record. Obviously I do. But day to day, I’m really not thinking about her. If I’m in a grand slam final, then yes, I am thinking about that record. Maybe I thought about it too much, and that didn’t help. The way I see it, I should have had 30-plus grand slams. I had my chances after coming back from giving birth. I went from a C-section to a second pulmonary embolism to a grand slam final. I played while breastfeeding. I played through postpartum depression. But I didn’t get there. Shoulda, woulda, coulda. I didn’t show up the way I should have or could have. But I showed up 23 times, and that’s fine. Actually it’s extraordinary. But these days, if I have to choose between building my tennis résumé and building my family, I choose the latter."

This just made me tear up.

And the asshole didn’t withdraw in time to allow a qualifier to replace him.

Could have provided someone with a $21k payday and instead he selfishly held on even though it was obvious there wouldn’t be a change.

Happy US Open Day to those who celebrate!

Despite Roger and Novak out of the tournament, lots of intriguing storylines on the men's side. Will Rafa's health hold up? Can Daniil regain some of his form from a mediocre year by his standards? Which American can make a deep run? In the end, I think despite all the talk about it being wide open I think we still see a Medvedev vs. Nadal final with the latter pulling it out.

On the women's side, it's obvious the number storyline is Serena. I don't see her making it to the second week, but I think she wins tonight and has a good chance of upsetting the second seed. I'm gonna go off the board a little bit and pick Daria Kasatkina to take the title.

Simona Halep is already out. Wow. Not sure why she struggles so much in New York. Her opponent, Daria Snigur from Ukraine, gets her first ever Tour-level win. Pretty cool to get it at a Grand Slam over a Top 10 opponent.

Changing my schedule to make sure I can watch as much Serena as possible. Definitely gonna cry no matter what. When Roddick retired I was a hot mess.

In the next few years as we lose Venus, Rafa, Roger, etc. it’s gonna be so much for those of us who grew up with them. I remember when I started tennis lessons in the late 90s and all of them started breaking through.
