Wow, well done to Sam. Played like a machine and didn't feel flustered. Is this the beginning of the end of the top 4 tennis players! The odd exception is actually Federer!!! Just realised I seen Novak Djokovic in 2006 when he was 18 in the Davis cup against the UK. I just read an article on the BBC describing him as "Superhuman" even back then. Also a another article back when Andy Murray was 18 at same event. I remember this so vividly, he just started swearing like anything! http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/4890440.stm
Muguruza isn't playing badly herself. It'll be a game of margins...and Venus is hitting those better right now.
Yeah, you can't discount Muguruza - she's been strong throughout. I expect Venus to win but it could be a lot closer than some would think.
The thing that annoys me about the "1-7" after losing the first set stat they keep going on about is that they never mention those 7 losses are ALL to Serena. That being said, she will have to drastically improve--where is the Venus from the last three rounds?--to do anything against Muguruza right now.
Getting bageled in a final is... wow. Heartbroken, but Muguruza has been brilliant and is so likable. Can't believe what happened in this second set thus far, honestly. How did Venus not break for the set and then all of a sudden this happens? Incredible.
Venus' grace in defeat--or period, really--is possibly the greatest in the history of sport. It's gotta be so hard and filled with a lot dark, solo moments, but what she can do in front of the cameras really is impressive. I'd be a mess.
I thought Muguruza had a really good chance to make it to the final once she beat Kerber, I just didn't think anyone would be able to beat Venus. It's kind of crazy how monstrously dominant Venus was and then she just kind of dipped. I guess that's sports for ya and what makes it fun. Maybe Serena will take longer to come back so Venus has another chance heh
Very sad for Venus. She's been so good throughout. But so has Muguruza and in the end she is a worthy winner.
