definitely meant to be some "turn off your brain and enjoy the ride" fun, but I literally could not understand who was shooting at who in the big finale. the jet-setting and heist set pieces were all strong though.
My biggest complaint about this movie was Nolan being an elitist snob and purposely mixing the sound to only come across properly on high-end, perfectly-calibrated, top-of-the-line cinemas. It's his prerogative I suppose, and I guess that's okay, but it seemed like a really dumb thing to triple down on in a project that was also supposed to be the blockbuster that brings the masses back to the theater and saves movie theaters. I might just be extra annoyed by this as someone with hearing problems because the technique he uses is almost perfectly designed to fuck with my hearing so I don't really hear any of it properly, but still, it seems like a dumb thing for a filmmaker to keep doing when his movies cost as much as they do and are expected to perform at a certain level at the box office. Aside from the sound stuff, I really liked this movie a lot.
I can't imagine what cinemas you're even talking about; I think it's just a philosophy that generally leads to poor mixing. We have a nice TV and I absolutely could not understand it without subtitles. Definitely woke my wife up with volume switch between sound effects and dialogue.
I read a few articles with quotes from him that seemed contradictory, one in which he says that any apparent problems you think you hear are actually how he wanted it to sound, and then another quote where he came off really elitist where he said it is designed to sound correct on high-end, well-calibrated theaters and he's not worried about how it may sound at theaters with sub-par setups. I'm trying to find both quotes.
The mix was fine, the BRAMS where more important that the dialogue and were mixed as such. 90% of the dialogue was psychics jargon exposition which you didnt need to understand because 1. its theoretical psychics jargon 2. its not real and 3. it wasn't a complicated plot. They're chasing a backwards bomb forward through time, then back again. OK got it? don't worry they'll explain it again in a different exotic location if you missed it but the BRAMS are playing so sit up because that means the time fighting action is starting and that why we're here. the other 10% was just that women missing her child and we didnt need anymore of that.
I hope one day I’m given a massive budget and I blow it all by slowly pushing a plane into the side of a storage unit and get to hype up how I crashed an actual airplane
