i guess it feels like it'd be the opposite since dunkirk picked up way more accolades/awards whereas interstellar felt like more of a step down by his standards

Without having read too deeply into what is going on, I've been assuming the big push for Tenet to be *the* film that ushers theater going back into our lives was being driven in large part by Nolan himself. He has made his thoughts on theaters well known by this point and he is someone with enough clout in the industry to use his film to make that push if he so wanted to, and it seems like he does.

All just a wordy way of saying that he has much more clout than most filmmakers out there. I don't think most filmmakers can overrule most studios or even push back all that much on things like release dates in the way that Nolan can.

I truly don’t believe that Nolan has as much clout/studio influence as people seem to believe he does.

Nolan definitely has persuasion. As for WW84, that seems like a movie WB wouldn’t want to test the waters with. They want to make sure that one is a hit and I feel like Tenet is a better film to not only test the waters, but less of a risk than WW84.

right lol. he’s made two movies grossing worldwide over a billion. and he doesn’t have the awards accolades some others do either. it’s weird that WB is completely bending to his whims.

fwiw this isn’t nolan bashing. i’m 100% certain i will like tenet more than any DCEU film that has been or will ever be released. but some of these statements aren’t really based in reality.

The studio was willing to release the film in July before the covid numbers jumped back up just because Nolan wanted it to be and according to this article, because he’s a “proven moneymaker and they wanted to make him happy”. He definitely holds some persuasion on the release of Tenet.

Lmao in what world is WW84 a “risk”? The first one grossed nearly $1 billion.

It’s a risk because if it doesn’t do well then WB will lose more money, opposed to if Tenet doesn’t do well. WW84 has potential to make more money so why release that as something to test waters and instead hold on to release it when that money is not guaranteed at a later date.

WW84 cost about $50 million less to make than Tenet and it will likely gross higher at the box office.

Also, again, it’s the highly-anticipated sequel to a universally acclaimed blockbuster superhero film. The very definition of low-risk. It’s as sure of a thing as you can have in modern Hollywood.

    That’s why I’m saying...
WW84 could make over a billion if people are comfortable with going to theaters, where as Tenet is less likely to make that. So let’s say which ever film is released first only makes $500 million. WB would lose more potential box office $$$ if it’s WW84, therefore Tenet is less of a risk to be released first.

But the reverse of that is also true. WW84 would get more people to the theater than Tenet would. So why release the more expensive movie that’s less likely to drive people to the theater first.

I don't pay as much attention as I used to to Hollywood and filmmaking, but I thought someone like Christopher Nolan was as close to being a Stanley Kubrick as any filmmaker is or even can be in 2020. Maybe Quentin Tarantino, but even then I would guess that Nolan has more clout and sway than Tarantino.

Like I said, I don't really follow these things like I used to. I could be DEAD WRONG pretty easily and it wouldn't surprise me. I used to stay abreast of this kind of stuff like 15 yrs ago and I know things are radicslly different these days.

I'm not counting someone like Steven Spielberg who was an owner of his own studio for a while.

    * Edited to add that I didn't mean the comparison as a talent comparison, like Nolan is as talented as Kubrick or vice versa, I was strictly talking about relationship with a major studio where the filmmaker has a say over things like marketing and release dates and such.

I feel like Tenet will draw a more diverse crowd, where as WW84 will probably draw more of the same comic book movie goers so Tenet might be better to guess if the casual movie goer will be willing to step in a theater.

That is not accurate whatsoever. WW84 would absolutely draw a larger and more diverse crowd than Tenet.

Guardians of the Galaxy, an IP which literally nobody in the mainstream had heard of before the first movie, managed to outgross Interstellar in 2014. You think the Wonder Woman sequel is going to draw a less diverse crowd than Tenet? Come on.

WW84 will definitely have more reports viewers, which is what happens with a lot comic book films. Will it offer a more diverse group of ages along with a good mix of casual and comic book moviegoers? Who knows. A more diverse crowd doesn’t always mean a higher box office which is what I was getting at.

I agree on the larger, but not sure on a more diverse crowd, but who knows? Maybe it will. I do think it’s the right choice to release WW84 when you know that more people will be paying for seats. If I was WB I would want it to make as much $$ as possible, especially since it could join the billion dollar club.

Edit: maybe diverse isn’t a good word for what I was trying to say. Maybe just casual moviegoers is a better term for what I’m trying to say.
