You have to get a return on your investment eventually, especially with no other movies coming out to provide revenue and who knows how many projects had to stop mid-production. They're just delaying the inevitable home release.

The movie should not for any reason premiere on VOD. Save it for next year.

I mean, I’d definitely pay to rent it on VOD...WB *hint* *hint*

  5. They’ll push it a year before putting it on VOD, it cost too much money and will make too much money to release in a way that’s instantly pirated and forgotten, as all these VOD have been during this period.

Just delay this by a year.

maybe if this country wasn’t dumb as shit we could be on a position to see a new movie in a month.

At earliest I don’t see this opening now until Labor Day, but I’d probably put money on it opening in November.

thing is, if people were smart (as others itt have shown they aren't) and stayed the fuck home and covered up, theaters may have rightfully reopened by now. or at least acceptably returned much sooner than it's gonna realistically be safe to. if theaters are back in august, any moviegoer is playing russian roulette at this point

Minus Trolls, which made roughly 100 million somehow

  10. I saw that. But even double that would be a big failure for this.

Trolls is a family movie that was released at the beginning of the pandemic when kids were sent home and parents needed something to keep the kids occupied while they adjusted to working from home and schooling. It also has still lost money from what I understand.

we haven’t seen a movie that’s comparable enough released straight to VOD to try and extrapolate anything from it. i think they push this back almost month to month until theaters open. but acting like this can’t go to VOD bc king of staten island didn’t make money isn’t exactly a 1:1 comparison lol

Yup, even if they made this 30 dollars VOD, no way it could come close. Trolls has that “put it on in the background to shut uo the kids” appeal haha

Wait, do people here actually care if it is or isn’t very profitable?

What difference does it make to anyone not involved in the studios/production? It’s not like Nolan is going to be blamed or lose future funding due to it.

Right, that’s why I said I was only referring to people not directly involved in the production of it. Like, why would fans care if this makes money or not?

Nolan is going to continue getting massive budgets and leeway for as long as he wants unless his movies start making less than $100 million consistently.

Like, 5+ in a row is what it would take for him to be impeded.

I could be reading it wrong but it seems some people are personally invested in this making a ton of money. Like, who cares?

People are commenting on profitability because discussing any option not based at least in part on that is silly. We can debate what strategy makes the most sense on a macro scale for these studios, but like, who’s gonna hope it get released for free on YouTube, or aired on network television, or downloaded to our iPhones for free?

Though, if we’re only supposed to think about what we’d like, not what’s actually a conceivable possibility, then yeah, this is one of the films that I’d most want pushed back until it’s safe to go to the theater.

Sure, if wanting to see it in a theater for the full experience is why you want it delayed then that makes sense. But bringing up the money aspect of it just strikes me as weird, especially for some of the wealthiest movie companies and directors of all time.

There is some merit in hoping this makes money. It's one of the rare blockbusters that isn't a sequel, reboot, or remake that's likely to make money. Now sure, it's not the same as hoping a smaller or independent film makes money, but I think there would be some significance to the first film to get released during all this becoming profitable and being an original idea on top of that.

I don’t know, it just feels weird and gross to me because it’s Nolan. It reminds me of toxic fandom things like review bombing something because they hate the director or actors (like Ghostbusters from a couple years ago) or the opposite rating them highly everywhere before they even come out.

Yeah I think most people are arguing this won’t come out on demand because they’ll never make their money back going that route. It’s wishful thinking it’ll drop VOD.

For sure, and that’s valid. And admittedly, I could be just reading the intent incorrectly. It felt like people were personally invested and worried about some billionaires making more money, haha, I could be reading it wrong

The money discussion is coming up over and over again because, at the end of that day, profitability is going to dictate how WB eventually decides to release the movie. Literally no other factor matters in terms of that decision. People are just trying to predict when the movie will come out, it’s that simple.

Nolan valuing the theater experience is also legit for how visual his films are, we're just not ready
