Third listen and yeah this is fine. Doesn’t reach the highs of CNJ or EIABH by any means but it’s good music. It’s fine. Hate to compare them and Heavenward like it’s a competition but I feel like it’s inevitable with their history. Heavenward takes the cake this time. Still love that record and spin it multiple times a week.
Digital Self, Cold Case, and Cigarette Two Step are pretty solid on second listen. Maybe more tracks will grow on me in future listens.
That Heavenward record is borderline perfection to me. Easily top 3 for my AOTY and I would maybe even rank it above CNJ. Definitely ranks higher than Still Love and EIABH in my eyes.
Honestly I’m inclined to agree but that could be recency bias. It’s a killer record and so far it’s top three for me, as well!
Aside from the fact that I think pretty much every song on that record is killer and zero filler - the production is just *chef’s kiss* I don’t like how the drums sound on this new TW record but it sounds big/full on Pyrophonics. Also; ever since Kam left TW - the bass on Earth and Still Love sound like an afterthought to me where as Pyrophonics it’s front and center along with the guitars. The opening track blows me away with the bass and drum tracks alone. Kam belting “let me float here tonight” is also just so good.
I remember being skeptical when EIABH dropped. It ended up being one of my top albums of 2021. Enjoying the new album on first listen. Cigarette Two Step is a banger. Those riffs on that song, it's fitting to have Fear Before on the track!
Album is a lot less straightforward than "earth is a black hole". Took a couple more listens to get into it, but it's fantastic. A lot more varied and less "poppy" than the last album.
Cigarette Two Step is such a fucking nutso perfect song to me that if I didn’t know better I swore they wrote it to cater to my tastes personally
Yeah, this grew on me a lot. It’s less immediate than everything else they’ve done, but I’m really liking it now.
It’s not as hooky, catchy as their last record for sure. But it’s moodier and they’re doing some awesome things instrumentally!
What’s wrong with the drum production on this? I’m personally a big fan of how the drums sound, very natural.
Gonna need to spin a few times but I thought this was pretty good after my first listen, would be better if they cut 2-3 tracks to tighten it up and some of the features seemed unnecessary, just minor gripes
lol I thought the start and finish were both good but tracks 5-8 are where I thought it dipped in quality
Cold case, Diorama, and something good all top tier tracks for me, I’d say wax poetic is one of the weaker songs on the album but I still enjoy the hell out of it.
Been spinning this quite a lot and I love it. I think I still like Black Hole more but this is a solid followup. During Cigarette Two Step I get Matthew Good vibes, especially the second verse.
