Very meh on this new song. Not super worried though since the album's gonna be like, 15 songs? There's songs off Red and 1989 I don't care for at all but both those albums have about the same number of tracks and there's more good than bad in both cases imo.

But yeah, the "she's dead" thing is so dumb, even worse than THIS! SICK! BEAT! was, ha. At least that was sort of endearing in it's awkwardness? This is just bad.

I don't know, I'm just exhausted by the warring fandoms element of all this shit. I don't know about anyone else, but...I don't really find it difficult to enjoy Taylor Swift and Kanye West simultaneously. Katy Perry is awful though so that's whatever.

Also? I keep seeing the "Taylor voted for Trump" meme cropping up and I can't tell how serious people are about it ha. Far as I can tell, the only connection is that she's buds with Karlie Kloss, who's dating Jared Kushner's brother. But, glancing at Karlie Kloss' twitter feed it seems like she's pretty clearly anti-Trump.

The other thing I see addressed a lot is her silence and refusal to speak out against Trump when so many of her contemporaries did so, which is a fair criticism. But, I'd wager that since Swift got her start in country and built up a lot of her fanbase in country audiences, there's probably some lingering fear of getting Dixie Chick'd, even though she hasn't really been a country artist for like, three albums now. But I'd guess the majority of her fanbase now aren't exactly the post-9/11 war hungry red state voters that railed against the Dixie Chicks, so...I don't know?

Not to completely derail the thread but whaaat? That's crazy! Rich people really do just date each other

To derail further there is a long standing theory in the Kloss fandom that she's just dating him as a business arrangement for his image, which is why they're never seen together unless Josh needs people to remember he's a democrat lmao.

Lena Dunham def convince her to vote for Hilary haha, but yeah she's very strategically not political for that reason I think

I used to rme at people who called Taylor out for not speaking up politically just cause there's tons of celebs who don't and idk why it matters if she doesn't specifically. But eh I changed my mind. It seems like she avoids politics to not alienate her base. Which would be whatever if she didn't try to use feminism to boost her image and deflect criticism. I do believe her that she is a feminist and genuinely cares about it, but I also don't rly think u can divorce feminism from politics and have it both ways. I think if you're gonna make feminism a big part of ur platform ur gonna have to get down and dirty with the political aspects too and risk some alienating. Idk. I feel conflicted about it.

Haha, I had no idea. I know absolutely nothing about any of these people apart form what I pick up through osmosis. That'd be funny if it turns out to be true though.

I forgot all about her being tight with Lena Dunham, ha. But yeah, it sucks how many country artists who are pretty visibly inclusive and forward-thinking are pretty much one tweet or bit of stage banter away from getting blacklisted from the industry ever since that Dixie Chicks incident. So while I don't really agree with performers remaining silent, or just speaking up in the most nonspecific way possible, I can at least understand why someone like Miranda Lambert might be more reluctant or nervous to speak out than someone like Katy Perry would be.

I'm of the same mindset re: Taylor and politics. She's never given me any real reason to doubt she genuinely cares about feminism et al but she ends up being so vague and non-threatening about it that it renders her brand of feminism pretty toothless and superficial, at least on the surface.

That being said I'm still not totally convinced the timing of her music being released for streaming was entirely coincidental hah. But that one I'd be okay with.

OK the song played on the radio and its worse than I remembered it. My mom stans her and was like wtf lol.

Imma be real and I know she doesn't have a huge following here so nobody will agree but I swear to god the song would be better if Britney sang it around the Blackout era. The song has Dramatic/Mona Lisa vibes already and reminds me of how the original Gimme More video was supposed to be Brit attending her own funeral and Mona Lisa has that moment of silence. like the death to the old image is right up her alley except I think it'd have a funner flair to it if Brit did it. Ok I'll never speak of it again lol

This song is a sound so many pop stars have done better or with more unique personality. Even the playing with media perception and reputation is stuff other pop stars have done better, Britney chief among them. Kanye too (though a lot of what Britney and Kanye were responding to in their personal lives ran much deeper than celebrity feuds, probably a part of why Taylor's single feels so empty). When they reinvented themselves and made big statements of change, it felt huge and meaningful. Prince, Beyonce, plenty of musicians make dramatic reveals at changes in persona and music. This is so tepid though, it's a sound that's been heard, it's a confused message (what exactly did who make her do? and why does nobody trust her if she's shedding responsibility for her reputation?), and it's so insular. On Life of Pablo Kanye retreated further inward and insular and I found that isolating, I hope Taylor's new album isn't too preoccupied with similar themes.

Britney was god-level at electro-pop too, so there are a lot of reasons this song brings her to mind.

I still think this song will be huge though. I'm not saying this as a negative, but I think middle to upper class white girls will absolutely love it and give it a lot of staying power.

"The world moves on, another day, another drama, drama But not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma" makes me think she's also gunning for LGBTQ people, that's a drag queen lip syncing line if I've heard one

After the thematically appropriate I Know Places and the ironic glam of New Romantics (and I guess the throwaway gay line in Welcome to New York) I feel like she could be really popular with the gay community if not for the fact that it's fashionable (and reasonable in a lot of ways) to hate on her right now.
