If I trim romantic, wish list, and cancelled, this is a pretty enjoyable 30 minute listen for me. As of today lol

 

At best Travis seems sweet but dumb. But I will give sis props because she manifested her star football player boyfriend from day one. And I give her mad props because I don't think there's anyone on this planet good looking enough to make me pretend to care about football.

 

I was thinking about the best Taylor muses and I'm going to have to give it to Joe Jonas and Harry styles, with Jake Gyllenhaal rounding out the top three. I would say Alwyn was a top-tier muse since we got folklore. But we also got lover which I do not enjoy so don't know how that balances out

but yeah as a former HS football player and a huge football fan I just love/get a laugh out of the dumb jock stereotype because it is really true about a lot of football players, just not in the 80s movie bully way it was always portrayed. “Golden retriever boyfriend” fits perfectly for a lot of them lol

 

So one of the catchiest choruses on this album (Opalite) just kinda plagiarizes The Thompson Twins’s Hold Me Now?

There’s also Wood sounding like “I Want You Back” by the Jackson 5 and the title track sounds like “Cool” by the Jonas Brothers. It’s interesting that Olivia had to give up 50% of credits for Deja Vu but Taylor is able to take heavy influence without any issue (yet).

 

This album cycle has truly been fascinating to watch unfold lol

 

Had to sit on how the album was for day. Gave it another listen and…I think this is arguably one of her most lackluster albums imo. Not saying it’s a bad album, but it doesn’t have the highs most of her catalog does.

Lyrically it’s a letdown. She spoke of it being really catchy prior to the release. That was cap.

I liked 2 songs - wish list and cancelled. (Cancelled is a bit of a stretch to even say I liked, but I’m more willing to relisten to that than any other song besides wish list)

The songs either just fell flat, musically, or the lyrics were so bizarre it took me right out of the song.

I wasn’t a big fan of tortured poets department either, so 2 back to back misses is not what I was expecting. They’re just missing the charm of her middle catalog (Red to Midnights).

 

All the music she’s put out since Evermore just comes across straight up low effort. Makes her branding and marketing look comical

 

I mean she literally quoted a matt nathanson lyric in one of her most famous songs and didn't give him credit. And I'm not saying she even needed to necessarily. But but if she's going to get credit from Olivia for deja vu, Matt deserves something from All too well lol. I swear I remember him even tweeting about it when red came out. But then I think he quickly deleted I'm assuming after Taylor Nation contacted him

 

I really love seven of these songs, then there's another three I'm still not quite sure how I feel about. The last two are down there with my least favourite Taylor songs but they're fine.

 

The absolute lack of integrity from RS lmao like. I remember the lowest score I've given in a review being a 5/10 and that was borderline 'I don't like this much and maybe I should put it back on the table'. If you're sent an album to cover and don't get on with it, pass it back and show some spine!

 

Someone just pointed out in a TikTok this is her first album in five years to not include a lyric about wanting to die/kill herself. No matter what you think of the lyrical content of the album as it stands, I think we can celebrate that at least. Not even in a parasocial way. Just a happy for another human way.

 

I always wondered about that line from Matt Nathanson. Did she never go en record crediting him?

Or she just happened to write the same line he did?

 

Wait, does she not credit the Jackson 5 for Wood? It was so clearly that song.
