One thing that kind of pisses me off - and I know we can’t put all the world’s problems at the feet of a billionaire or even remotely rely on them to do good things when we need them to meet the moment - Was just like so many of these billionaires and companies, she was vocal on social issues in her music during Trump’s first presidency, as flat-footed and hamfisted as they were.

This time, there’s something like “Cancelled!” that just comes off as the Lucille Bluth “How much can a banana cost?” meme, where instead of having some song of support on here, it’s “I like my badass, rich friends who, I guess, did bad things and people don’t like them?” It couldn’t be more tone deaf. And on top of that, the beat is bad.

Just got out of the movie

    -Ophelia music video rules

-It’s the clean versions of every song

-Her intro to each song was hilariously vague. I think at one point she says something like “I’m really inspired by culture”

-No tea spilled. For example, she says Father Figure was inspired by a “creative writing exercise”

-This is not an album that benefits from the lyrics being displayed on a big screen in front of you

It's definitely not the female empowerment song she probably thinks it is

Whoever said she's trying to impact the algorithm so whenever you Google "Taylor Swift cancelled" the song comes up instead of whatever negative story is in the press may be on to something lol

This will have to be a grower, because the first couple listens do nothing for me. Even my oldest kid is saying she hasn't had a good album over the last 4 releases (which is blasphamy, as Evermore is great, and I agree, is the last good album she's released).

    The spiciest meme

I'm sure it's been said already but yea folklore/evermore truly were the last special releases I can think from her, wild it's been 5 years and 3 albums since now

On one hand, I kind of understand from a safety point not being outspoken about social issues now but on the other hand I’m kind of surprised she is way more silent now than Trump’s first term when things are soooooo much worse now. It seems like during the Lover era and for a bit after she was pretty outspoken and even was saying she didn’t want to be silent.

This shit sucked. Two good choruses on the whole album and the lyrics are stupid. The most high school album of all time. Got more enjoyment out of the new Victoria Justice single than these 12 songs.

Speaking of Victoria Justice, I learned that she has been intentionally dropping new music the same day as Taylor’s album release dates for a couple years now and honestly…that’s kind of a genius idea.

I think the first two were coincidences but after that she must've leaned into it because everyone else will avoid that date (also it's funny).

My local Target had 300+ of these on the shelves when I went out tonight, absolutely wild. We get maybe 5 copies of any other new record

Listening to it this morning I could definitely hear this more, especially with the Olivia-esque sound going on I wouldn't be surprised if at least the two of them were on her mind while writing it and the general concept could easily be applied to a lot of her more enthusiastic haters.

If Taylor Swift had put out Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party, it would be an absolute shoe-in for Album of the Year at the Grammys.

I think you mean if she was capable of it.

    she’s showing she’s not.

Yeah, I don't think it's an accident that the song sounds that much like Olivia. Maybe a dual response to "Sympathy Like a Knife" and "The Grudge."

I hate the song enough as a response to “Sympathy is a knife,” which so clearly was focused more on what being around Taylor surfaced in Charli than on Taylor herself. (I 100% believe that Charli genuinely doesn’t like her, lol, and fair, but that song so clearly isn’t a “diss.”)

But, if it’s also a response to “the grudge”? I’m biased because that’s probably a top 3 Olivia Rodrigo song for me, lol, but it’s also such an honest, vulnerable song. It’s about the rawness of feeling betrayed, and the bitterness and sadness it brings.

I don’t want to say Taylor Swift is incapable of introspection when some of the stronger songs in her career suggest otherwise, but like… I’m randomly remembering the talking point for “Back to December” being people’s surprise that she was actually saying sorry, lol. And I’m really getting sick of her narcissistic, defensive tendency to paint herself as “the victim.” Absolutely the thinnest skin imaginable.

I'm not a huge fan of Taylor Swift by any means, but I did really like Folklore, Evermore, and Red. The past few have been meh for me, and this one just isn't very good. i think she needs to mix things up a bit.

After 4 full listens now, I really think the title track is my favorite. Wish more of this were in that vein, thematically.
