still have not heard either of the first two on the radio so I encourage taylor and her team to keep following their instincts
I feel like if you avoided a multi month run of Ophelia at #1 it says more about your radio listening habits and stations of choice than it does a single’s cultural relevance
Well there's your problem. Why on earth would it be playing on KROQ? Or has that station changed since the mid 2000's?
Even this long after release the first 3 songs is just an insane run and each is a great single choice imo. Taylor is probably my least favorite of the 3 but the “I can’t have fun if I can’t have you” line is one of my favorite moments on the record.
Ruin The Friendship is my favorite song off the album but I am not sure that is the most radio-ready song, lol
Wood should have been a single. (Because I want to see people freak out. The chaos would be entertaining.)
Last thing on the matter, Opalite already dropping back below Ophelia further just shows that it's rise was manufactured, ok I'm done sorry
I think it's a popular song, it basically has not left the top 10 since release but it's one week at number one was obviously not organic at all, which kind of taints the significance of having two number ones come from this album IMHO.
The thing with Taylor is that her albums get so much play immediately at the gate that the second, third, fourth singles have no novelty left to them by the time they get the video/radio treatment. Hence her difficulty getting more than one no. 1 per album. The first single is basically guaranteed to top the charts, and subsequent singles either need a big fucking boost or ain't getting there. (This theory is not helped by the overall lack of novelty in that very stagnant top 10, but I stand by it!)
Funny enough the trick to getting multiple number 1s next time would be to have a few pre-release singles, but that would make first week sales much worse
I think she is still traumatized from the reaction to ME! that pre-release singles are forever a thing of the past for her.
