Yeah, a huge, huge percentage of people will just listen to whatever slop Spotify shovels into their ears. Reading the book Mood Music by Liz Pelly earlier this year pretty much cured me of putting any stock in any streaming-related listener metrics, and that includes the Billboard Hot 100.
Also, do we really care who comes out ahead in this particular battle? We're talking about Taylor Swift trying to keep her 13th number 1 hit on top of the charts for a fourth week, versus the song from a Netflix movie eyeing a return to the top for its ninth week. Not exactly a David/Goliath showdown.
Taylor being recruited for KPop Demon Hunters 2 as a main antagonist demon would go pretty hard, take all that Cats experience and expand
Lol yeah I was thinking of that concept even as I typed out the word organic. And I fully admit I am part of that. I want a song to feel like an organic hit that just became a hit because it's so infectious and great versus seeing the artist try so hard to get it to stay or hit number one. It almost reminds me of when actors campaign for an Oscar. Everybody is doing it but once Melissa Leo goes over the top and obvious about it then everyone starts to cringe and complain. Within a very manufactured and calculated industry, how can we try to seem the least manufactured and calculated lol No one wants to see the man behind the curtain
weird to not even say what it is, or where to get it, or anything.... it's a remix you can purchase somewhere apparently
Well if anyone could have the money and means to have a song be directly downloaded into your head it'd be Taylor
I’ve been hearing The Fate of Ophelia everywhere this week. The grocery store, the cafeteria at my office, the movie theater lobby, the ten minutes I was in someone’s car and they had the radio on. That did not happen with Fortnight.
Trump giving it a big push right now. Wonder how long she'll stay silent on that. Hmm I wonder how many days are going to go by and till she catches enough heat online to issue that performative PR statement. Good on Olivia though.
I don't listen to Taylor Swift, because we were both on Tumblr at the same time, and that makes things awkward for me.
This album is still number one and Ophelia is still number one but at the same time this era feels...dead? Lackluster? Boring? I think it's because there is no tour and she just did one week of promo and then went back to silence. I guess I was just thinking with this being billed as her "big return to pop with Max Martin and Shellback" there would be...more this era. Maybe more is coming next year to extend the era for the Grammy's 2027, but we'll see.
This feels like it has even less legs than TTPD did which is an impressive feat. She's been front and centre of (pop) music discourse for five and a half years at least, bubble had to burst sometime
Not saying you're right or wrong, but, a genuine question: what is an album with legs supposed to feel like these days? From my perspective, this album rollout felt pretty much the same as every other album these days. Lots of chatter those first few days, a bunch of reviews and podcasts, maybe a few interviews and TV appearances, and then music discourse largely moves on. I know she's Taylor Swift, but even most of the big stars don't seem to be immune. There are albums up for AOTY at the Grammys that I legitimately forgot came out (sorry Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga).
