I’m never subjected to the radio anymore. In grocery stores and stuff I hear a lot of older Taylor though
The single is top 5 at top 40. Mediabase Building Charts She currently has the entire top ten on the hot 100. I dunno, that doesn’t seem like “this isn’t popular” territory to me. Billboard Hot 100™
The immediate chart placements were a given. I'm talking about actual lasting cultural memory. I don't get the feeling there's another "Cruel Summer" in the mix here.
But the albums only been out a couple of weeks and is literally as high as it can be at this point in time? I just don't know what actual evidence points to anything besides this is the most popular artist alive and the most popular album of the year by a massive margin?
not sure why you feel the need to cape for her this hard. all I'm saying is there's a difference between a #1 album and a song you will still hear on the radio five years from now.
This is a genuine question, not meant to be "caping up" for her: How many of the top-charting singles from 2020 do you still hear on the radio on a regular basis? Because I'm scrolling through this list, and I think the answer is, like, 5. Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles of 2020 - Wikipedia
Gonna score keep: hollow’s second sentence there is certainly true, having a no.1 =/= lasting impact (reinforced later by Craig’s list) Jason’s point about her being the most massive artist does not necessarily counter hollow’s point about this may not have a lot of cultural legacy despite its sales. based on the mixed critical reaction to this record it’s a fair take (though I think Ophelia and wood at least will be Taylor playlist staples and it’s still way too early to say that…there are people now saying reputation is their favorite…) *but* Jason’s stats do defeat the original argument that this album represents the downfall of her dominance taylor is in such a big league of her own that you can almost only compare her to herself and other artists not dependent on chart toppers, so idk if an arbitrary 5 year billboard snapshot is the best counter to hollow’s point either *but* Taylor released 2 big albums in 2020 and despite their songs not appearing on that list at quick glance, I’d argue folklore at least does indeed have a significant lasting legacy, at least in Taylor land, which may help out hollow but yet again, goes to show that Taylor’s legacy is beyond singles charts, reinforcing the idea that she is remarkably still at the peak of her powers, defeating the original assertion that she is on her downfall.
I've only heard Ruin the Friendship on the radio so far, but sometimes it takes a bit for things to catch on. Like chappell Roan's the Subway came out a while back but I feel like I just now started hearing it on radio a ton. I did hear Our Song on the radio recently and I almost forgot how lil she sounded
Radio tends to lag in general, but if we really want to get into it… the music ecosystem was in a better place when radio programmers and gatekeepers had more power to shape what you heard in public spaces. Now that CVS or whatever grocery store can just throw on a Spotify playlist based on their existing tastes or brand identity vs passively letting a cultural tastemaker push things, there’s less opportunity to reinforce new music for the folks that are there shopping.
We got this video anywhere else? I don’t want to use X, and I don’t have any other mainstream social media (I guess I might be able to find it on Bluesky). I have 10 days to stop my Meta accounts from deletion, but I might need to share this Hank Green clip. Love him.
Taylor is one of those artists whose personal life is such a part of their brand that it's hard to separate the two. It's just interesting listening to her sing on every album about the new man that saved her from her sad existence with the wrong guy she was with before and how now she can truly shine or whatever. And I don't mean it in an oh my God how dare she date so many men way. And I don't think all of her music is as autobiographical as she or her fans put out there. I'm sure sometimes she just sort of runs with a lyrical theme when the idea strikes. But like dang homegirl loves love. Which is not a judgment but I guess just an observation. That is not new, but I'm bored and listened to a big playlist that spanned her career so y'all have to deal with my very profound and original thoughts
Other than being from that insanely popular Demon Hunters movie, I don't understand the hype for "Golden." It kinda just sounds like an autopilot Ariana Grande track to me.
I don't think it's very good either, but I also haven't seen the movie, I'm sure the movie makes it better
It's definitely by-the-numbers but it does by-the-numbers well, I'd take it over pretty much this whole album even lol There are songs from the group/movie that I do like more though
