I didn't mean to suggest that your feelings were wrong! I'm just surprised, I guess, because that song in particular has always struck me very much as "We went into a room and recorded three takes and used this one." I've never heard a complaint about it not sounding organic enough. The newer version felt a bit more mechanical to my ears. But maybe that's just because I've heard the original hundreds of time.

(They are both wrong for that song, it should have been Chapman, and if he couldn't/wouldn't come back, it should have been a different country/Americana producer.)

Sounds like you have a similar opinion on this album to mine on the Fearless rerecord as I never spent much time with that one outside of the singles. I thought most of that album sounded a lot better whereas here any changes feel like mistakes because I'm so used to the originals.

    totally agree

it fits for the time and place these songs were originally recorded and released as well

unfortunately I think her vocals are worse on a lot of these songs versus the originals

people ITT have pointed out the lack of momentum on a lot of the pop-leaning cuts and I think it's really noticeable in the vocals

that was the one thing that brings me to the re-recorded Fearless over the original release

it's a bummer in this case especially because one of the highlights of her last three studio albums imo have been her markedly improved singing

i remember when people wrote off "stay stay stay" as target or spotify commercial music. now it's "vlog music"? hold on let me get my reading glasses so i can look up what that is on goggle

I don’t think it’s nearly as significant imo as you’re painting it but yes, after listening to them back to back, it’s mixed a bit lower and the tone feels like it’s got some more highs rolled off. it’s still one of the first things that stood out to me on first listen of the new version so I guess your response seemed hyperbolic to me and hence why I quoted you in the first place. but, as I said, it would make sense my response would be different when I haven’t loved these songs for the better part of a decade.

sounds to me like a song that could have sold me just about anything in the years 2011-2015

red helped me so much during my transition. A pivotal album and I can’t wait to spend the foreseeable future listening to this beauty again. ♥️

I think her voice has gotten a little lower and smokier over time, which works incredibly well for folklore/evermore, but doesn’t work quite as well for some of the really big, high, pure pop hooks on this record.

"Message in a Bottle" sounds like the big end credits song to some early 2000s rom-com, and I am here for it.

I like "Stay, Stay, Stay". Never understood the hate for it. Still don't like "I Knew You Were Trouble"

Totally agree. It works on State of Grace, All Too Well, etc but the big pop anthems just don’t have that same fire. That’s just another amazing thing about music though, isn’t it? Songs are like a time capsule, a snapshot in time. In many ways, despite our best efforts, they’ll always be difficult to completely recreate.

i hope more people fall in love with "the moment i knew" because of this release, because i have been the only person who loves that song since 2012
