john: what she wrote in that song was very mean

With respect to Taylor and the "I wrote all these songs 9-10 years ago" narrative, there are some lines on this record that I would be willing to bet good money she wrote in the past 365 days.

The way she cut “Message In A Bottle” from the back half of Red. Can’t believe she had this song in her pocket for a decade.

Haha, in fairness, isn't "The Story of Us" also about John Mayer?

Still wondering if Maren Morris can broker a peace treaty between Swift and Mayer so we get "Dear John (Taylor's Version) (Feat. John Mayer)."

Label couldn't have been happy about that one (if they ever heard the song).

It’s absolutely baffling that Run didn’t make an Ed album in the interim. This song is like Tenerife Sea Pt 2 sonically

    If you don't, don't

I'd argue Message In a Bottle could've slotted in nicely on 1989

They ended up doing alright with the songs they got haha. I am absolutely craving the Vault songs from 1989.

Ha, true. Only one number 1 hit from Red, though!

Yeah that wouldn’t have been it though. They probably either thought it was an inferior version of “Holy Ground” or that thematically it wasn’t going to fit the album arc.

I might need to steal your tracklist project for these b sides. This is really like a free incredible Taylor album.

I did the same thing with Fearless earlier this year. @Garrett also called it "wild" then too lol:

Totally fair, I’m just saying that I can’t personally imagine listening to essentially a cover version of a known classic album first, especially when the original is right there.

Admittedly, I have found myself wanting to queue up the original version of certain songs like immediately as a song finishes to see if I can pick out the differences.

This is a very messed up way to take in music, I fully acknowledge lol. But I'm loving it!

Taking a pause from this to listen to Silk Sonic and the 8 tracks+intro vs this 30 track behemoth is very amusing to me.

i can't get down with these uncanny valley rerecordings, the production is appreciably worse

I think I'm going to end up making playlists where I sequence the album switching between whichever I think is the better version between the original and TV releases. Anyone done this for Fearless (or this) yet?

I have never been a huge Taylor fan, despite enjoying a song here and there, but for the past year and some change I’ve been dating a pretty hardcore fan. needless to say, during the lead up to this release my partner listened to Red OG almost exclusively (some songs I was hearing multiple times a day haha), so while I had never listened to the record in full before this year, I have had my fill this past month or two. for my tastes, this is a marked improvement over the original and I can’t imagine I would ever want to listen to the old one again outside of maybe doing some side-by-side comparisons. only bothersome moment for me was the now seemingly infamous “weeee” in WANEGBT, aside from that I feel like there’s a lot more power/energy/momentum to these versions. the songs sound more organic to me all-in-all, and Taylor’s vocals on the whole just sound so improved to me. this might honestly be my favorite thing she’s done thus far.

I'll always be surprised "22" only made it to, like, 20. That song really felt like a chart-topper to me the first time I heard it. Not sure what happened.

With a few exceptions, that's how I'm feeling about the re-recorded album. Most of the upbeat songs especially seem to sound a lot flatter. "Holy Ground" and "22" lose all their momentum.

(My version of this for Fearless would be the entire original album with just the last two tracks swapped for the newer versions.)

Also, speaking of making the b-sides into fanfic albums @Matt Chylak, here's what I put together yesterday for this:
