I'm baffled by the notion of Paper Rings and Afterglow not being top tier

  4. I was having a hard time deciding if Paper Rings should be top or middle. And because I had a hard time deciding, it made sense to make it middle. But that song is fun and I like it a lot. Reminds me of Stay Stay Stay a bit.

“Afterglow” is meh for me. Not bad, but one of the few songs of hers that I’d describe as feeling kind of anonymous and bland.

A fun thing to think about is that the rollout of fearless vs red is clearly a large scale A/B test

I liked paper rings a lot when it was released and added it to some playlists and I tired of it quickly. Didn't have a ton of replay for me despite liking it a lot initially

I’m wondering if the change in Billboard rules post-Folklore led to the way Red (TV) is being released vs Fearless (TV). The rule change being that sales for physical albums don’t count until they are shipped.

Have to imagine the Week 1 sales are going to be much higher than Evermore and Fearless (TV) by being released on all formats all at once. Although as we saw with Fearless (TV) there does seem to be a limit to how these new versions can perform vs Taylor’s brand new albums. Fearless (TV) fell quickly on the chart after each format release.

It’s just jarring looking at the week 1 sales for Lover/Folklore vs Evermore/Fearless (TV) because of the rule change. Outside of surprise releasing an album like Folklore/Evermore she’d probably prefer all platforms are released at once so the Week 1 sales look as robust as possible compared to the mega numbers for Speak Now through Folklore.

Yeah, and I just mean like we also got Love Story and two vault tracks before Fearless. We’ve gotten NOTHING from Red. I think she might be testing whether or not she has to do singles and such to get the sales she wants. She knows Red is a safe bet for a home run with her fans, so now she can test for the greater music landscape maybe.

Totally. It’s been interesting seeing all the differences specifically between these two TV releases. Makes you wonder if she’ll try something different for 1989 (TV). I mean I guess she already has considering a song has been released without any album announcement.

That one she absolutely could drop at anytime without notice and I wouldn’t be surprised. It’ll kill it no matter what and debut at #1 with just downloads/streaming similar to Evermore.

1989 is such a close 2nd for me! I think some of it for me has to be that Reputation didn’t get overplayed for me. 1989 came out when I was 13, so I listened to the radio all the time and heard those singles constantly. Whereas with reputation, I was 16 and had a phone and Spotify haha. Plus, Dancing With Our Hands Tied, I Did Something Bad, and Call It What You Want are some of my favorite Taylor Swift songs.

Reading “1989 came out when I was 13” is the reason I have back pain today.
