I might have said this somewhere else on this site but when I rank albums it’s me looking at the piece of art as a whole and not the individual songs. Lover could have been higher but never seeing clips of the tour and folklore coming 11 months after the release caused me to stop visiting the album. Reputation has one of my absolute favorite TS songs but the lows are REALLY low for me and make me not enjoy listening the whole album.

Idk, yes and no. The strength of the Fearless vault stuff really has had me admiring her early output as just a really good songwriter. She had a better batting average in that era than in the 2017-2019 period, IMO.

I think this comes down to the classic lyric vs music discussion and you're definitely far more on the lyric and songwriting side whereas I am on the more musical side. Like, for me, something like False God/Cornelia Street/Death By A Thousand Cuts is infinitely more impressive and enjoyable than any song from any of the first three albums.

I am super interested what arc her career will take going forward. I get the sense she felt a ton of artistic freedom with the style of songwriting on folklore and evermore that she maybe wasn't getting when writing albums more aimed at radio and big stadium tours. I find it hard to imagine her going back to, like, 1989-style pop from here, but who knows?

I've definitely thought about this a lot. I think Lover shows exactly what you are talking about, where half the album feels like a HUGE artistic leap forward and half feels radio-safe. But yeah, after folklore/evermore, I have no idea what is next

Those songs are all great, but like, I'm definitely on the "'Cornelia Street' is 10 times better acoustic" train. I think there are songs on both Lover and Reputation that could have been better with simpler presentation. "Death By a Thousand Cuts" is kind of the perfect mid-way point, for me.

different strokes! I couldn't imagine losing any of the production or instrumentation off Cornelia Street, fucking ICONIC song right there

I wonder how she feels about Lover. And Reputation, for that matter. I think it would be super interesting to hear her get candid about those albums and their reception/performance now that we're a few years past them. I find it fascinating that her big thing after Red didn't win Album of the Year was that she wanted to make more cohesive albums, but those albums are scattershot and completely all over the place sonically, especially Lover.

For me, that song is all about the lyrics and the vocals, and I think the production has the effect of kind of dampening the impact of her vocal performance on the song. The Live from Paris take is such a vocal tour de force, and it really takes the song to a different place IMO.

I gotta do a Live From Paris re-listen soon, still weird they were all released as individual singles instead of a cohesive live album

I wondered recently if we might get a Lover (From The Vault) EP or something.

There's this lil change she makes on the live Cornelia street where she sings "the city screams YOOOUR name" with more emotion on the your and I love it so much that alone has me prefer it over the original
