    Justice for Miss Americana.

Also, “Soon You’ll Get Better” is in my top five least favorite Taylor songs. I am sorry, I understand some people might find some profound meaning in it, but putting on Lover was crazy to me! It works better as a single/b-side.

I liked “The Man” when the album came out, but that song has 100 percent worn out its welcome with me. Some real rough draft lyrics/rhymes on that one.

Lover is such a mess of an album, lol. Some great, great songs, but it is her least well-realized project as a whole. No cohesion to that thing at all.

It's wild that it has two of her best songs ever (Cruel Summer and Death By A Thousand Cuts) and like... five of her worst.

It's not even necessarily the bad songs, though there are a lot of them. It's more that it doesn't seem to have any sort of central theme or intention. Like, Reputation is way more of a "love" album than Lover actually is. It's bizarre.

This is my preferred tracklist too if I parred it down. But I just don't rly listen to Lover instead lol

The Man is peak like empty capitalism popstar brand feminism. Blank Space was a much more interesting critique of her image as it relates to dating men and feminism in that regard.

In the Man when she talks about an alpha being celebrated on men and all these sucky male qualities that she'd be praised for if she was a man... like GURL you shouldn't want to be praised for those qualities. Men suck. The answer is folks should be criticizing your billionaire BS as well as men's BS and it's dumb that men don't get called out for it just as much as you do. It's not that you should be criticized less.

Obv I don't mean the parts about her dating life.

It’s funny looking at the alternate tracklist suggestions and be like, idk. I do not remember enough of the album to even notice what’s missing or have a take on what isn’t. Like, I know I used to really like “I Forgot That You Existed,” but also, I literally forgot that it existed.

The only song I really think I’d like to work back into my rotation is “The Archer.” That might be a top tier song, in spite of being buried on a bottom tier album.

    13. Hits Different

Since I did the Lover one the other day and I've only recently got into the extra tracks on Midnights I thought I'd give that album a go too. I think this version would bump it up in my ratings significantly. I love the original ending with Sweet Nothing/Mastermind and would have liked those to make it, especially Mastermind, but they don't really fit anywhere but the end and Dear Reader/Hits Different there is the best part of the whole era for me. Hits Different in particular might be a top 3 Taylor song for me, it's so perfect.

I took a way more radical swing at resequencing Midnights a few weeks ago, after @Surfwax mentioned that it could have been her Tunnel of Love with some tweaks. Got me thinking about that Springsteen album and how it follows this pretty unusual arc/flow, and then I tried to replicate that feel with the Midnights era songs. And honestly, I kind of love it. Probably made some controversial decisions, though.

It really was about trying to find close corollaries with the Tunnel of Love tracklist. Like, that album opens up with "Ain't Got You," which is unlike any other Springsteen opener and is also kind of a head fake in terms of the mood/sound of that album. So, "Karma," which probably wouldn't have occurred to me a track 1 otherwise, jumped out as something I should try. And while "Mastermind" is an effective closer, I just think it leaves that album in too happy/contended a place considering the breakup album vibes that are all over the place on the album otherwise. "Question" felt like a more ambiguous place to end, not unlike "Valentine's Day" on the Bruce album.

Anyone, I'm a nerd so I probably overthought this, but it was fun to hear a bunch of these songs in a decidedly different context.

I'm going to finally start checking out the vault tracks next. I'll probably move backwards and do 1989 first.

  19. I believe it was @Craig Manning that put together track sequences for vault tracks, as if they were their own EPs/albums. You should listen to them that way, maybe!

Gonna listen to this, I love this approach. And you've got the non negotiable songs to me (Karma, Midnight Rain, YOYOK, Would've Could've Should've). I will say I think Question is bottom 2 or 3 from the whole project so I'm skeptical on that as the closer to say the least lol. But excited to see how this flows. Underrated batch of Taylor songs imo

Karma is one of my least favourites from Midnights but I think it's s surprisingly good opener.

I've gone all the way around the circle on "Question." Was one of my favorites at first, it wore on me when I was listening to the album a lot (I'm not a huge fan of the bridge), and then I came back around on it. It was the only song that I felt really captured that "Valentine's Day" feel, where you can read it as a love song on surface level, but it's actually really haunted and sad.
