I love cruel summer but I've played it to death over the years so I change it every time it's on the radio

Lol, why would any large artist bother buying their masters if they can just replicate what she’s doing. Her fans love it, she’s making bank, and she can release an “album” every 6-9 months.

Probably for the same reason most large artists don’t successfully attempt to get their fans to buy four variants of an album with the exact same material just so they can make a clock lol

I joke but it’ll be interesting to see how many large artists have passionate enough fan bases where it’s worth the time and effort involved to attempt a similar endeavor.

I think the tension between the originals and TVs (and various takes on which ones are better or worse or a lateral move) shows that re-recordings aren’t necessarily the same as owning an old recording.

That being said, as someone who loves Fearless TV, and is happy to have the longer “All Too Well,” and also loves what Thrice did with The Artist in the Ambulance… I do think this could be a neat precedent if done selectively (and not overdone). An old recording’s snapshot, lightning-in-a-bottle has great value, but revisited songs can also have its own great value.

On a similar note. The more I think about it (and I truly cannot believe that I’ve thought about it, lol), the more I prefer the original messy “Better Than Revenge” to the sad attempt to sanitize its messiness.

Yeah I agree, myself and my wife also prefer the original.

I know it would kinda go against the point of the “Taylor’s Version” thing, but I kinda wish she had taken the opportunity to reimagine or change the songs in some ways. Like the live WANGBT performance that everyone always references. Try to make them BETTER versions in some cases and not identical.

because so far in almost every instance I prefer the originals. Her younger, less refined voice gives a lot of those songs some of their charm. In my opinion.

it’s probably going to be less noticeable on 1989 and Rep so I feel like I won’t mind it for those two.

Yeah it would've been fun if she'd at least made some of the tour versions or some reimagained versions a bonus track. But I also get sis is giving us a zillion songs already. But still. I'm greedy.

I'm mid on this re-release like all the others. Won't listen to it aside from the vault tracks but it was nice going down memory lane. Innocent is nice when I think about it as a song about being in my 30s about being allowed to make mistakes and less about Kanye. I associated it to strongly with him when it came out

We may get WANEGBT and Love Story (1989 Tour Versions) still with 1989.

As usual, I think the ones that get the biggest lift here are the songs I liked a little less on the original ("Speak Now," "Back to December") while my old favorites mostly feel like they're missing something here ("Sparks Fly" feels weirdly inert, and "Last Kiss" loses a lot of the raw emotion or the original). I feel like there was a conscious attempt to "de-country-fy" the album a little bit, and I mostly think that is to the detriment to the songs.

"Long Live" is great though. Her voice sounds particularly matured on that one, in a really nice way.

This was such an iconic “shout along with the song in the car” track back in the day. I tried the new version yesterday a few times, and it just doesn’t feel the same, lol. At this point I’m kinda dreading “I’m Only Me When I’m With You (Taylor’s Version).”

Video game companies remake old games constantly, fair game for music imo which means yeah some will be good some will be bad

I'm waiting for someone to update an animated movie with dated animation. Not like those shitty Disney live action remakes, lol, but like, some of those early computer-animated films with updated character models and environments. As long as historically important work doesn't disappear (unfortunately not a guarantee!), I'm sure there are examples where that could be a neat companion project.

I feel like the new one downplays the fiddle and it completely kills the punch of the chorus. It's case-in-point for why I was concerned about Nathan Chapman not coming back.

The live action remakes are all so fucking bad. I haven’t been able to sit through any of them.

it's interesting to me that Hayley Williams is credited as herself, but Patrick is credited as Fall Out Boy. No one else from the band is part of the song, so it makes me wonder if Taylor wanted it that way, if Patrick and/or Hayley chose, or some weird legal things are part of it
