I like Dress and New Years and Getaway Car and those will probs be the only ones I really take from it. That Hilary Duff lyric was so jarring tho lmao but it was a fun, I'm guessing intentional, nod? I can't remember the songs I skipped but I skipped a handful. It's just not really my style of pop and then she doesn't really pull it off for me. I do think it's silly that a lot of people are already discrediting the sales. It's basically trying to discredit it because she's good at marketing and has persuaded people to buy a bunch of copies. I think buying multiple is silly but if sis got them to do that it's just smart marketing and if people are willing to throw all that money at her, it's just as valid of a sale. Also that song where she stops and cackles ruined so much for me. I HATE when popstars laugh in the middle of songs with few exceptions and I know that's a really weirdly specific pet peeve but Britney does it all the time too and I can't stand it lol.
It is! That's cute. When they laugh at the end of songs cause it was fun singing or recording it that doesn't bother me either. But creepy planned giggles/cackles always weird me out haha. I could write a dissertation on giggles in pop music I swear.
I love this. I wasn't sure if I would given the singles, but as an album I am really enjoying it. On a somewhat related note, I have two close friends that I also happen to work with. Yesterday they went on and on at lunch defending Kevin Spacey and blaming people that had accused him. Today they said the same stuff regarding Louis CK. Yet, they also came in ranting about Taylor and saying they've written her off for good. So, sexual assault allegations, those are cool, but feuding with Kanye West is unforgivable. Ugh.
Yea this is going to be the most annoying part of this whole thing for me. Is she playing the system? Absolutely, but every major artist is playing the system and they can't even come close to doing a QUARTER of the sales she is going to do (if she really hits the $2million, which I'm sure she will).
This is s***, after one listen. Holds nothing on 1989 But I'll probably listen a few more times for a more thorough opinion
Right like she has perfected the art of getting people to spend money on her. Sis is putting in that work liking Tumblr posts and convincing stans she's their bestest friend and inviting them to her house and sending them gifts thru the mail. Like she has earned that dedicated fanbase who are all buying 274579328 copies, plus playing the game just right to keep gathering more casual general public listeners and listeners from all over rly. She's been slowly building it up since her start. Like sry ur faves and my faves don't have her strategy and hustle but she earned all those sales.
People never give things time to grow. I'm guilty of it too. That's not to say that someone can't have an immediate reaction to a record, but it is so rare that I can develop an informed opinion about a record on first listen. Yesterday I listened to this and thought it was okay. I'm listening again now, and I think it's pretty fun. It's not a top 10 release or anything, but it is really not that bad.
It's such a weird thing to say because the album's only been out in the world for about 20 hours, but now that the hype of hearing a new TayTay project for the first time has worn off I'm hearing the songs for what they are and not the expectation of what they were going to be.
There's truthfully no word for it but "genius". Hell I'm not even a stan, and I'm about to buy a 2nd copy because I want to listen now and be in on the hype of it.
Yeah I'm guilty of this too; my opinion was just an initial, immediate reaction, as I was comparing it to 1989 and T Swift standards the whole time. But I'll spin it a few more times to make sure of my thoughts
we talked previously about how that would or wouldn't work. If a consumer pays $10 or whatever for one album, and they are given 100 codes, that doesn't count as 100 sales. Maybe UPS put actual money behind buying each additional code like Samsung did for Rihanna's ANTI, maybe they can count it as 3 codes because the minimum price for an album to count is like... $3.99? There are very interesting logistics
Our Song being top ten makes me as happy as gender reversed Ed Sheeran song You Belong With Me being number one makes me mad
didn't rob sheffield do that earlier this year any list without "treacherous" in the top ten is invalid
The thing is, artists like Swizzle get both sides of the coin, because we're primed to have a hot take but she's amassed the songwriting catalog (at least for her fans) to earn all those repeat plays that another pop star doesn't get.
Okay I know this is unrelated, but what the fuck does "stan" mean? I'm clearly behind as fuck, but contextually I'm assuming it means obsessive fandom a la "Stan" by Eminem?
I have LONGED for an album like this from her. Red was amazing, except for "Stay Stay Stay" being one of the worst songs I have ever heard. 1989 was the same way with "Bad Blood." She was always only one or two songs away from a masterpiece. So far, Reputation is doing that for me.
I think End Game might be the worst song I've heard in ages (Ed Sheeran is so fucking dull, but it's not just him), but overall really enjoying this. I did like the singles a fair bit though, so make of that what you will haha
Yeah you're correct. Some people refer to themselves as stans if they're a big fan of a person and likes everything of theirs, but other stans are much crazier. It's in the dictionary now!
