Wowowow a majority of the lyrics to Gorgeous are baaaaad. Song itself is fine, I almost feel like the beat could have stepped it up during the chorus to give it more of a punch? But it kind of just stays the same the entire song. Also kind of feel like the beat is too cheery? I dunno.
This is probably my favourite of the three just because nothing really stood out as being too bad. I still don't like it very much.
Def my least favorite of the three, but I like the "there's nothing I hate more than what I can't have" lyric. Seems like the most honest of the whole song, haha. Aside from that, Taylor Nation sure is having a blast liking things on tumblr and making people freak out. Her team is really good at keeping her super fans in the fold. edit to add the best tweet i've seen so far abt it:
Whereas Look What You Made Me Do is a very good song in a style I wasn't particularly hoping for, this is a pretty mediocre one that sounds more or less how I was hoping this album would. It's striking how much less polished this and Ready for It feel in comparison to 1989 and Red.
even if you don't like the song, and writers that don't like the song that is fine, but I'm seeing some personal attacks and that really bothers me
Oof, that was not good. Lyrics are 3 straight minutes of cringe. I try not to pay too much attention to singles, but I can’t deny I’m getting nervous about this album.
Tbh I haven't loved the songs so far but I usually don't love the songs she initially chooses to release. She seems to release the corniest/catchiest ones first and the album cuts are usually almost always better. Even if I don't like the whole album sis usually gives me something to enjoy.
Honestly, #FireMaxMartin No one has had a more negative impact on her music than him, imo. He's a good pop writer, but I feel like his influence took a lot of the storytelling out of her work and I don't like it.
I'm torn because I generally love Max Martin's Taylor songs. The ones on Red especially were soooo good! But I do prefer Taylor Swift's stripped down music, like the stuff on Fearless and some of Speak Now. But these Max Martin songs aren't great, and so now I just wish we had an acoustic album or something... sigh.
I generally like his songs with her, too, though they've rarely been my favorites. I think his "melodic math" approach leads to great hooks, but the lyrics and story end up taking a backseat.
I think Blank Space is basically a perfect pop song and I’ve been hoping we’d get something in that wheelhouse for a while now. But I agree that she’s not as strong lyrically when they work together. My current conspiracy theory is that this album will have one or two tracks that completely flip the lyrical narrative of the record. I think the singles are selling us on the “darker” supervillain version of Taylor, but the album will have more nuance than that via a change of heart. (Or at least, I hope so, because I’m 0 for 3 with these singles so far and I want the album to surprise me.)
They've definitely done great stuff together. "Blank Space" is perfect. So is "22." But I miss the more nuanced and personal writing of Red and the better half of Speak Now. 1989 still had some of that. These new songs mostly lack it.
