You last sentence kinda gets at why I'm not super big on her live. I totally believe she genuinely is connected to her songs, but when she performs it's like she is acting out the emotions instead of rly feeling them. It's odd. I feel like I can hear her thinking, "ok this is where I look forlorn, this is where I dramatically look to the side, this is where i do a dramatic hair flip" etc so it's cool u got to see a fluke like that lol!
100% Her entire performance is completely 100% choreographed from the moves she does to the words she says between songs/introducing songs. It feels more like a play than a concert, and it comes across (to me anyway) very dorky and fake. It was a really cool (and probably rare) moment seeing her just be human for a minute and not superstar Taylor Swift. I'm glad I got to see that.
from the live videos i've seen, especially this tour, that calculated nature seems to drop when she straps on the guitar. would y'all who have seen her before say that's true? and it's weird to me that it's considered a flaw to taylor when beyonce is 100% the same way in her performances. but, when i saw beyonce, the best moments were when she just dropped to her knees and belted 1+1 and Runnin' which is what i'd consider the "acoustic guitar" moment i was asking about with taylor.
I think the fact that it's extremely detailed and well rehearsed is a big part of why her live shows are so great and she is such a celebrated artist. It's the same as with Beyonce, every single tiny detail is perfected. Seeing Beyonce and Taylor within a few months of each other really shows why they are the top of their class
I think taylor swift is a bottom tier performer but the spectacle of her shows makes it exciting and fun and distracts from her middling performing ability. She 100% seems more natural and better with a guitar to me. Beyonce serves us the same decade old choreo each performance but she's better at that than like every one else in the game so she gets a pass from me.
Taylor always seems awkward, she's a great songwriter but I don't think performance,at least what we expect from pop shows, comes naturally to her
I'm sorry, I'm gonna have to say WTF to this. Her Coachella set was honestly the single best performance I have ever seen, every single second of it was 100% brand new and original as well... nothing recycled or old
I think that's her downfall (downfall meaning my personal opinion of her and nothing that impacts ticket sales lol). She seems to try really hard to do what she thinks popstars should do and it doesnt suit her abilities
I said she's a fantastic performer!! She just recycles a lot which is fine cause if it's not broken I guess don't fix it! To me u have like top tier 1). Beyonce, Bruno, maybe Adele tho I am still bitter at her screwing up that George Michael tribute!! Then for the middle tier you have like ur 2). Ariana Grande, demi, tinashe Then it's like bottom 3). Taylor, Katy, selena, etc
I would throw Ariana way at the bottom honestly, at least on award shows I have NEVER enjoyed anything she has done, poor girl doesn't seem to make any progress. Like, the BBMAs should have been a HUGE performance but it was so.... meh. Tinashe is the queen though. I'd swap her with Taylor!
This is interesting, I’d like to see who else you’d think fit in these categories if you have the time!
I was being generous to ariana cause her voice lol. She is a complete black hole of charisma and stage presence lol but I will concede that not everyone cares about that for some reason. Poor sis can't command a stage. I saw her do an awards show once and the camera literally lost track of her for a second because she did not stand out at all among her dancers lmao
Every time she gets announced for an award show I think... "this is the one, she is going to shine!!!" and then.... blah
At that Vegas festival I was at, it was a 2 day thing. Taylor headlined the first night, and Bruno the second night. Bruno blew her out of the fucking water. Natural born performer, that guy.
My categories are controversial because I allow lipsynchers to be at the top sometimes depending on their ability to command a stage. And then some performers move up or down the scale depending on the passage of time. Kelly would be another top tier I forgot. I'd love to see her. I think Normani may be one to watch too. Her BBMAs performance was a lil too extra for me given the song, but I think she has the chops
Soooo many popstars would benefit from not dancing. And I'm not one of those like oh their mediocrity is so cute and relatable cause I can't dance either!!! Like naw I don't wanna see myself up there I wanna see someone like Beyonce! I don't care how badly someone dances in their free time, but once u introduce it into ur stage show it's up for critique as much as anything else! It's what makes gaga a middle performer too. She has worked hard and improved but dancing doesn't seem to come naturally to her either so it knocks her down vs if she just sang with her piano or something. But then like crj's dancing is just kinda cute bopping as opposed to choreo so it doesn't knock her down. There's a formula!
For sure. I saw him with an older friend who had never heard a Bruno song prior to me inviting her to the show, and she left a massive obsessed fan lol
