I assume Cruel Summer was never released as a single because Covid right? Once they went with Me/You Need to Calm Down as the first two singles summer/late summer of 2019 she really couldn’t put out Cruel Summer as an official single until maybe Spring 2020 and by then it would have been maybe in poor taste or just scrap everything at that point. Hard to remember.

 

That’s my assumption. She would have still been pushing the album during summer 2020 for Lover Fest had the world not gone to hell. As you said, the song didn’t fit the times and she was already working on Folklore in Spring 2020 because of Covid, while all of us were none the wiser.

 

Her single rollouts for most of her pop albums haven’t always made sense, but Lover was so scattershot and wild. Amazing that album came anywhere close to a million week one.

 

I like this though. I mean we just got a new video for Lucy Dacus’ “Night Shift” and the world is better for it.
