The Great War with Aaron Dessner and You’re On Your Own Kid. She also said she’s now repeating special songs from Midnights when she wants to, but other albums are still one time only. My hometown friends are killing me with videos this weekend. Love them. Can’t wait for Nashville.
One thing I definitely don’t need in the acoustic/surprise song slots is more Midnights tracks. Gimme more from the albums underrepresented on this tour!
Now that we’ve had so much time with this album, what’s everyone’s feelings towards it? For me it’s a Lover-like entry where there are some really cool highs, but the length and “bad” songs really bring it down a notch.
I absolutely love the album, but for me there are a couple of songs from the 3 AM edition that should have been part of the actual album and a few of the album cuts should have been the extra stuff.
Midnights is what I believe Lover should've been - a happier but somewhat more mature return to pop with a condensed runtime
Mad Woman with Aaron Dessner and then Mean. Every single Speak Now song has absolutely gone off on the surprise songs. Imagine what that section could’ve been, Taylor!
Man, I think "Great War" is a big wet fart of a song. Surprised it has fans. Such a clear "should never have seen the light of day" b-side to me. I generally think the 3am stuff got left off for good reason. The only b-side I really think should have been on the album is "Hits Different," and that's not even a 3am song. Midnights is solid, not great. I still think it's her weakest album since the debut, and I'm a little concerned that the massive popularity of it will lead her to stick with the current formula/collaborators rather than getting a little riskier and more experimental on the next album. I hope I'm wrong! As much as I love Jack, I think it's really time for her to make an album without him.
I would like to see new collaborators for sure. Have any in mind among the current pop landscape that you’d like to see?
Pop landscape, I have no idea. In terms of more country/songwriter people, though, I’d be ecstatic for her to write with Donovan Woods and Lori McKenna.
Hits Different is awesome, but no way in hell it fits on Midnights, it feels like a Fearless/Speak Now era song if anything
Good not great. With the promo before the album released I was expecting more late night, ethereal vibes. I pretty much agree with you here. It starts well and there are some high highs, but then there’s a song like Vigilante Shit which sounds to me like an awful reputation b side and just ruins the flow of the album.
My thoughts are largely the same as after the first listen. I don’t revisit it much and a lot of the main record feels repetitive to me. I tend to think the 3am songs are better. Great War and Paris are among my favorites. Unrelated, but have ticket prices been dropping in the days to hours before the shows? Is it worth holding out hope for a weekend road trip?
For me, "Bigger Than The Whole Sky" is one of the best songs she's written in years, and I love all of her albums.
It’s a B- for me. It’s probably the lightest on hall of fame Taylor songs of any of her post debut albums, but even an album of mostly “just good” Taylor songs is still pretty solid. Lover feels like a good ballpark for it, though I could go either way on which is better. Midnights is a more pleasant beginning to end listen, but there’s a bit more truly great stuff on Lover, I think. I find the 3AM stuff almost entirely unnecessary, but Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve and Bigger Than the Whole sky could have been album tracks.
when I was in Vegas, day of tickets actually got higher in price the closer the show got. I hit $450 on a slot machine and that would have got me a ticket behind the stage. I couldn’t justify it. that was just one show though! I haven’t been following prices since
Agree that Lover is probably the most comparable album, but I think the highs on Lover are *way* higher
I actually think there's a cool, late-night, too-tired-to-sleep delirious feel to that song that would work really well on the back half of this album. I don't actually think it fits less well than, like, "Karma." On an alternate version of the tracklist I made, I put it before "Sweet Nothing," which I think works great. That one is very nice. I'm not nearly as enthused about it as a lot of people, but it's a good song and should probably be on the album.
I find Midnights to be much more consistent than Lover, Lover is whiplash between great and not great, but the highs on Lover are exponentially higher than Midnights
