I'm not a Swiftie but I am interested in the craze. Would you Chorus.FM folks say this tour/level of popularity is comparable to Michael Jackson in the 80's?

I mean it’s your own fault if you buy resale right now instead of waiting. The whole point of resale right as tickets go on sale is to make a profit no matter how shitty it might be. And it’s not like I won’t end up at one of the Chicago shows. She has 3 of them

It's hard to compare. Demand would have still been high if it had been 4/5 years since her last tour, but the pandemic and her prolific output only multiplied that by 4/5x at a minimum.

I think a fair amount of people have been holding back from concerts even in the current phase of the pandemic, but this is one of those acts that people are willing to risk being in a crowd of people for.

Same, have a friend who's dad worked in the industry and still friends with plenty of people. He's been making calls for us.

Somehow snagged great seats for the Saturday Philly show. THE 13TH of all shows. Not bad for my first time seeing her. Might have quietly cried to myself while trying to answer work emails right afterwards.

If you pay $25,000 for a concert ticket, you are a fucking moron who should not be allowed to make their own financial decisions.

unless they revived George and John and it's a Beatles reunion, I would pay $25k for that, GO AHEAD AND CALL ME A MORON

I think the fact that we'd have to bring two of the most famous people in history back from the dead for that price to be reasonable underlines the point, though.

I mean that’s obviously rich people doing it. It’s dumb but it’s not some 19 year making $12 an hour.

If you’re a multi millionaire. And you can forget trying to fight a million people and just instantly give your teenage daughter a front row T swift concert experience for what you make in a day. Go for it.

Especially if they’re buying the tickets from a poor person who has never seen $10,000 in their life lol

I actually think the "only rich people buy exorbitantly priced tickets from scalpers" or "only rich people buy expensive VIP tix" lines of reasoning are reductive and harmful. I mean, obviously $25,000 is an extreme case, and in that scenario, you are probably correct. But I've seen a lot of people on Twitter saying they bought thousands of dollars worth of VIP tickets they couldn't afford because that's all that was available and they "have a credit card with 0 percent interest for a year so it's fine!" There's been some good journalism in the past few years about die-hard fans/stans and how they feel duty-bound to spend a ridiculous amount of money on their favs to the point where they end up in dire financial straits. I think that's part of the reason it's so important for major pop stars to take a stand against the current live music status quo, and why it sucks so bad that people like Taylor really aren't trying to make it better. A lot of fans are young people without a lot of money, but they've got credit cards! So they can and do plunge themselves into debt for a concert that should never have been that expensive in the first place.

Idk what the solution is. It's a complex situation, and obviously the laws of supply and demand are at work and are doing what they always do. It's just depressing to watch stuff like this happen, because this industry is so clearly in need of reform on multiple levels, and the people with the ability to actually move the needle largely do not give a shit because they're the ones getting rich(er) from exploitative practices.

And this devotion is particularly strong with taylor fans and imo is a devotion that taylor knows how to nurture very well and intentionally. Fans call and harass radio stations if they play her "stolen versions" of her songs instead of the TV ones, report her album leaks to taylor Nation like they're the ones missing out on the coin, feel like they need every variation of her vinyl and every limited edition merch drop and poloraid picture, etc etc. The more attention they can get for being devoted to her the likelier they can get invited to a secret session at her house and eat her baked goods, or she'll randomly send them a personalized Christmas gift, or they can catch her mom's attention at a show and meet her. so they are tremendously rewarded for their over the top parasocial relationship, unlike other fan bases where the artist will maybe just like a tweet. I do think taylor does try to make experiences special for her fans so she's not like evil laughing her way to the bank, but it's still super weird imo

I just truly don't understand how an artist doesn't feel weird about that. I'd feel like I was creating a cult.

Yeah, I've never been sure what to make of all that. My feeling is that Taylor means well with that stuff, but the result is exactly what you said: a cult. And she definitely knows how to use it in her favor, whether she's sending her fans after Scooter Braun or mobilizing them to get her some new chart records.

Okay I've seen a few meme posts like "trying to buy taylor tickets on ticketmaster and suddenly sympathizing with the daughter in law" and I gotta admit I cackled
