I don't even remember what Don't Blame Me sounds like. I need to give Reputation another listen before the new album comes out.
Ok I like the new song immensely more after seeing the music video. She really went all out. Also the album art is absolutely gorgeous. My fav art of her's yet.
Vertical video for the song, which is just the one guy dancing to the whole song ha Taylor Swift - You Need To Calm Down
YNTCD debuted at #2 on the charts, again behind Old Town Road. Nothing is beating that beast of a song this summer
I've only heard people talk about that song, but I don't think I've actually heard it knowingly, haha.
It's mostly a meme song, but it has a catchy line, so the combo of those two is basically unstoppable in today's musical climate
"Meme culture" is just too much for me. The bass player in my band is 21 and he's constantly laughing his ass off and showing me memes and I just don't get it, haha. There's occasionally some funny ones, but the vast majority of them just don't tickle my funny bone. I'm an old man/buzzkill.
The funny thing about "Old Town Road" is that it's caused all the young black kids in my community to be super into what's kind of a Billy Ray Cyrus song. Hearing kids in the hood sincerely love a cowboy song is an interesting experience, lol. This one kid from my church & neighborhood plays it at least once literally every single time he's in the car with me.
The more I hear "You Need to Calm Down," the less I like it. Really think both of these singles are among her weakest songs. Luckily, this thing is 18 songs long, so a few skips isn't going to be a big deal.
The more I hear it the more I like it, lol. Just a jolly little tune. I'm definitely hoping for some way better stuff on the album though.
I think the lyrics have irked me more as I've grown more familiar with them (and read some of the criticism of the song). I also just think that the hook is...not that great?
I like elements of both singles, especially the hooks, but the lyrics reaaaally drag both down for me. She doesn’t pull off that magic trick she sometimes does (all over rep) where she delivers a sub-par lyric so well that it sounds good. Luckily both of these songs are late in the track list so we really don’t even know what the bulk of our first listens will sound like yet. Rarely do tracks 14 and 16 characterize the sound of an 18 track pop album.
I like both songs enough melodically that the lyrics don't bother me. They're a bit silly - and some of the critiques of YNTCD my gay ass just vehemently disagrees with cuz we're not a monolith - and obviously bottom tier Swift work, but I don't mind them. I have a very real weak spot for catchy, bouncy tunes. Probably because "bouncy" isn't a state I ever find myself in so I gotta compensate elsewhere.
