the chorus of "Afterglow" specifically the way she uses her head voice is very "Wildest Dreams" "Afterglow" is the better song though imo
I figured out which insanely random song Daylight reminded me of, the ran with the wolves part reminded me of U Got It Bad by Usher
2:31 into Miss Americana reminds me of JoJo's "Get Out" Anyways, really digging the album more and more with each listen. Paper Ring is still my fav.
Today's thought: "Lover" feels like "Ours" grew up and took control. Something about the wording in the latter: "your hands are tough but they are where mine belong" to "With every guitar string scar on my hands I take this magnetic force of a man to be my lover". That narrative shift feels poignant to me, and yes I am absolutely overthinking this.
The best moment of the entire album for me is the OKAY in miss americana when she sounds like an anime character
I've been really into the end of the bridge for "Cruel Summer" where she yells "HE LOOKS SO PRETTY LIKE A DEVIL" in that downright riot grrrl voice.
am I the only one who finds it weird her token sex song immediately follows the song about her mother’s battle with cancer? I get the common religious imagery in both, but like, idk
In my hypothetical resequencing both London Boy and False God get cut so maybe you’re on to something Soon You’ll Get Better is the most personal song she’s ever written and it’s devastating and perfect and I love it and it deserves to not be between those two songs.
Yeahhhh, there's some weird sequencing stuff going on in the back half of this. It's odd, because I think it's pretty perfect for the first 10 tracks.
if you really want to suffer listen to "The Moment I Knew", "Ronan" and "Soon You'll Get Better" one after another like my sadistic shuffle decided to do to me on the way to work this morning
Here's where I'm at with reformatting the tracklist to trim the fat and make the narrative arc a little more clean. Maybe it's removing some good songs but I think it actually flows quite well and is a "better" album listening experience. Feel free to give it a try! I Forgot That You Existed Cruel Summer The Man Lover Paper Rings False God Death By A Thousand Cuts The Archer Soon You'll Get Better Afterglow It's Nice To Have A Friend Daylight I go back and forth on "The Archer" in between DBATC and SYGB.
Agreed. I'm also convinced that song is about her audience and herself more than it's about any single person, which is very fitting for this part of her story arc.
My resequencing has The Archer as the closing track and it really works for me - the weirdo who has daylight in the first half of the album it just works okay
I can’t get over It’s Nice To Have a Friend. I feel like it’s one of the first times she’s kind of had a small idea for a song and just let it exist as is. It reminds me of the Paramore interludes and it’s just so effective to me a quiet, simple little song before the end
The only thing working against "It's Nice To Have a Friend" is my 3.5 year old is obsessed with it. I think we listened to it twelve consecutive times in the car today.
