I think my single favorite part of this album might be the deep breath and sigh right before the last chorus of "Soon You'll Get Better." It conveys so much without a single word or note.
This is so, so good. Exactly what I wanted from her after reputation. It sounds like she took everything i love from that album and ditched everything that didn’t work and shined it over and over. Early favorites are Cruel Summer (that bridge is my favorite part of the album), Cornelia Street (classic-sounding Taylor song) and Lover (which might be her best song ever).
I don’t disagree with the emotional aspect of the song, i just mean that musically those 3 songs are the clear outliers meant to be singles and I think they’re a really jarring departure from the rest of the record. I mean, you can argue that’s part of the kaleidoscope analogy and I won’t fight it, but for me, they stick out like sore thumbs.
Can't stop listening to this. "Cruel Summer" and "False God" are my two favorites right now. This is some of my favorite stuff she's ever done
I feel like this record has a night half and a day half, and it'd be easy to sequence it in that way.
Here’s my next attempt at resequencing that I like better: 1) The Man 2) I Forgot You Existed 3) Miss Americana 4) Cruel Summer 5) Death By A Thousand Cuts 6) False God 7) The Archer 8) Cornelia St 9) Afterglow 10) I Think He Knows 11) Paper Rings 12) Lover 13) Soon You’ll Get Better 14) It’s Nice To Have a Friend 15) Daylight B-Sides: 16) London Boy 17) YNTCD 18) ME!
Y’all are crazy for not liking Forgot You Existed as the opener. It’s the perfect opener and sets the tone really well.
Did this tumblr song preference quiz thing paper rings is absolutely my jam The run from I Think He Knows to London Boy is incredible Overall, extremely good album. It gives me Red vibes
This song is the moment when it clicked for me what she has on this album that she's never really had before: restraint. She doesn't need every song to build into a showstopper. Sometimes she just lets a good vibe ride and puts the focus on the lyrics, and that's a new element in her pop phase, if not in her whole career.
With every album she gets so much more intentional as a vocalist. She started her career as a poor live vocalist and a passable recorded one. But she's grown into a really, really good studio singer. Her delivery feels like a conscious choice at every step of this record. When to be breathy. When to shout. When to go down for the last note instead of reaching. And even her moments of talking are so much more carefully calibrated this time around.
It’s just a bummer to me to carry Kimye drama into 2019 as the first thing we hear when The Man is right there.
Every secret sessioner said she heavily implied it was abt Kanye ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I have a hard time believing she ever had a second thought abt Calvin since she immediately went jetsetting with Tom and then right into her very secret relationship with Joe. The stories don’t line up.
Imagine this Taylor going back & rerecording all of Fearless. Even though her reasoning for planning to rerecord her albums is a bummer (that whole crappy masters situation), it's gonna be such a blessing.
