alright, i did it. i'm sorry. august this is me trying peace mirrorball betty --- seven the last great american dynasty exile my tears ricochet the 1 --- illicit affairs epiphany invisible string --- cardigan hoax --- mad woman
Jesus, give me Taylor's Automatic for the People. I've settled on "august" as my favorite, too. I think I like "cardigan" and "illicit affairs" more than you, and "seven" and "tears" less than you.
If you include collaborations/"compilation" albums a certain artists' noisy/jarring album would fit with that narrative
fine, i’ll do it floyd > petty > springsteen > REM > bowie (diamond dogs) > jay > beatles > taylor > cure > led zep
I’ve developed a real love for “mirrorball”. Was listening again this morning and I love that Dessner compared it to The Cardigans or Mazzy Star because that’s the exact vibe I get from it. I was sitting in my office parking lot and immediately felt like I was in junior high again riding my bike down to the mall where I’d be thumbing through magazines while some hazy 90s song is playing over the store speakers. That’s all the memory really consists of, but it feels so profoundly real when “mirrorball” hits. I also love that anecdote about how “the last great american dynasty” was written. Aaron sends what he’s got, goes for a jog, and comes back to this beautifully written song. That’s amazing.
Cardigan is probably my least favourite. Just not super into the melodies and vocals. Even thats a nice enough song though. August is the one growing on me the most, love that song.
Yeah I don’t care much for cardigan. I probably like half of this a lot and don’t care terribly for the other half. I’ll keep listening and I’m sure that’ll change
Oh and I know “hoax” isn’t the most popular song, but I also thought the story behind that one was interesting as well: Found it insightful because it reminded me a lot of exactly how “Light Years” was written as the closing track for The National’s last album: That grabbed me because Dessner mentions how much Taylor loved the last album and the Mike Mills film.
the ranking wasn't even that hot. the only ones I could see gripes for are the beatles, and that's one of their weaker albums, and Jay, and it isn't one of his weakest, I just prefer others more for personal reasons
Here’s the breakdown for Taylor’s album: The Story Behind Every Song on Taylor Swift’s folklore And here’s the breakdown for The National: The National Break Down Every Song on Their New Album, I Am Easy to Find
"for once" lol, try not to be an ass OK? Thanks. Sgt Pepper in the middle is pretty egregious, I don't think Dark Side is the best of the albums at all. The Petty album is great, but not better than most the albums there.
it's petty's best and he's one of my favorite musicians of all time, so sue me. hard to be more overrated than sgt. pepper. same could be said about DSOTM and I get it not being for everyone. put king of limbs behind Taylor and ahead of the cure
If we're not counting live albums, Lou Reed's Street Hassle was an 8th album. And if you DO count the sountrack, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is Elton's. If you go with the UK chronology, The Stones are Let It Bleed . EWF it's All 'N All or Spirit (depending on whether you count Gratitude) Parade for Prince is a cool one too. Great artists definitely have a long history of doing something interesting on the 8th one.
