Wait, I read an article this morning that said they had decided that they had broken up based on this album lol.
Personally I think she got married in the 7th month (July - seven) on the eighth day (August) and she got proposed to on the day that game of thrones episode aired where Kaleesi snapped (mad woman). It all makes sense.
There seems to be a consensus forming around “Mad Woman” being near the bottom and I could not disagree more. One of her most intimate, conversational vocals. Her falsettos on “crazy” are maybe the best things she’s put on a track. The cadence of “wrap your news around” is so goddamn good. The way the piano plays off the beat to make the song have that lurch is so cool. There’s insane guitar shit happening under the whole thing. That final loud and sustained “maaaaaaaaaad” where she cuts against the expectation to drop down for “woman”. And the drums on that outro are extremely my shit. The devil’s in the details on that song.
I’m probably still not in a place where I’d be able to do a ranking, but mad woman would likely be near the bottom if I did. Good song, just one of the only tracks that doesn’t really elevate the record for me. Maybe it’s a sequencing thing or something
I love Mad Woman. My least favorite is Hoax, but even that one is good. I literally can’t rank the album aside from Hoax likely being last.
I could not pick a song that would be last right now. Maybe a top few, but nothing sticks out to me as an obvious weak point. I love that so much. Also, I spent all week putting together this awesome, US-101, road trip, coast driving playlist and it's just moot now. Taylor Swift the whole time.
The melody of “isn’t it just so prettyyyyy” in invisible strings so subtle and so catchy. A lesser artist would’ve made an entire chorus out of those four notes and here it’s not even the main hook
I agree, the more I listen to it, the more it just sounds like a normal Taylor album to me. The bones of the songs aren’t all that different, the songs are just dressed up a different way. I hate to even bring it up but it’s already been proven that her songs can work through an indie lens when that one jackass I won’t name covered 1989 and all the indie heads lost their mind
I agree. I think it’s a more complex update on “The Man”. That was her straight-ahead feminist anthem. This one’s got more nuance. I’m less over the moon about “Dynasty”s lyrics, but they’re also good, as all of hers are
Just a heads up, listening to this in the car to go get some evening ice cream is highly recommended.
Got a couple more listens of this in today. It’s hauling ass towards that number 1 spot. Look out, Speak Now.
i just love the storytelling aspect of it and am a sucker for any song that mentions st. louis. and it being about her house in rhode island, i have a special connection to that state now with my ex being from there
My fiancee went to school in Newport and is fascinated by those big old mansions and Swift owning one. She's pointed the house out to me multiple times while we've been there. So she's ALL over that song. I get it, too. I'm a sucker for songs that mention Boston. I could listen to "Walkaways" by Counting Crows 1,000 times.
driving by all those mansions are some of my favorite memories whenever we'd go visit her mom in newport haha, i love that place
This is (in my opinion) the correct way to frame that take from Tomberlin about people not supporting smaller folk artists.
It's a great city. We got together in Newport. Had our first kiss there. If I got to look off that cliffwalk any time I wanted, I'd write a bunch of albums, too.
"seven" mentioning Pennsylvania gives the already dope song bonus points for me, so I relate to the above conversation, lol.
Newport's only an hour from our house and all our neighbors who've been stationed there with the Coast Guard have said we have to check that place out for all the amazing houses... I'm sure hers is constantly having people drive by.
