    I suppose the fact that you just ripped this off the cuff and it is so much better than what Smashmouth came up with shouldn't surprise me at all given that these are the gentlemen responsible for crafting "All Star", but this is still very funny.

  4. Thinking about that culminating moment in "my tears ricochet"... whew. I'm still in the stage where my brain physically rejects the idea of ranking the songs. The stretch of "the last great american dynasty" through "this is me trying" keeps getting stuck in my head though. Like, all of the songs. They're taking turns.

    This album is so gorgeous. I just love it.

    Obscurely enough, I can't hear "Mirrorball" without thinking of Rugrats when they would always say, "It's a mirable!" instead of "It's a miracle!" Anyone else? No? Cool.

    definitely not to the extent it does now. because lets be honest, there are some people out there who only checked this out because of those names attached, and i imagine some or most of those people had no interest in taylor swift to begin with and had their mind made up about it before they even went in. if those names werent on it, those people never take a listen, and those that actually like taylor and are interested in her are the ones checking out the album. thats not to say im not extremely happy aaron had such a heavy involvement in this and that justin did some work on it too, just saying im sure that scenario has happened and bolstered the whole indie narrative thing going on.

    Also, to circle back, it’s weird to say that *Taylor* ripped Tomberlin or any other indie artist off when Aaron, Jack, and Justin played such a major role in the production and construction of the instrumentals. Like, if anyone ripped her off—and to be clear, no one did—it would be Aaron, right? It’s just a weird argument that feels more like misdirected anger than anything else

    very much agree. think there's a lot of themes to explore and bring into an awesome review (5 Star's 10/10's, A+'s only of course) of this release:

    - Successful musical partnerships between established male & female artists and tipping point between when a musical project comes out as a solo record (this) and when that project comes out under a new name (eg. Better Oblivion Community Center)
    - The trend of music junkies looking to "big surprise releases" now more than ever, perhaps to fill the void of no live shows during the pandemic
    - One where all of the influences are specifically called out - piece by piece- and explored

    bear in mind I still need to read stereo gum & rolling stone write ups.

    agree 100%. my partner & I have already debated about this several times. almost as many times as i've debated it with myself haha

    I can't tell if Tomberlin is mad that not enough people are listening to her or genuinely frustrated not enough smaller artists are getting attention. Because if it's the former, lol. She's not huge by any means but she's way more popular than A LOT of musicians out there. If it's the latter, that's a struggle for tons of smaller musicians and an "issue" that's been ongoing for years. Not something Taylor caused or can fix.

  14. There's a valid complaint to be made about how power and visibility and tokenism work in the music industry and it simply didn't get made. They went straight for complaining about Taylor instead because it's easier.

    In short: it's absolutely misdirected anger.

    For sure. I won’t pretend like seeing Aaron and Justin’s involvement didn’t make me excited for this record in a way I’m usually not for Taylor’s records, but I would have checked it out regardless. I think a lot of people are interpreting their presence here as deliberate pandering to an “indie” audience when it’s clearly just musicians working together who have a mutual respect for each other.

I'm actually touching on this in a piece I'm writing about this debacle: as a LEGITIMATELY poor, unknown, queer brown artist... watching relatively established (and largely white) indie twitter complain about Taylor's privilege has been great for my nonexistent abs because I've been laughing so damn much reading them

    it was kind of touched on yesterday in a conversation but this mindset of competing for listens, needing credit simply for inspiring people, the anxiety of being a small artist going up against mega powerful big names, it's all fueled by the capitalist structures that are plaguing and destroying the music industry. artists shouldnt be pit against each other to begin with, taking inspiration from unlikely places shouldnt be a bad thing, but with the competitive nature of capitalism and the uncertainty of where your next check is going to come from, those mentalities prevail.

    for sure, it definitely worked the other way too. i wasn't huge on her last two records but was a big fan in the past, and with aaron and justin attached i was super hype on this. now, i absolutely would have checked it out if they were involved or not and if it still somehow sounded like this i would still enjoy it, but it did get me interested in her new work in a way i havent been since 1989

I'm glad it led me to explore something different and have it work out so well that I now have a few new favorite songs. as an added bonus, my wife gets the pleasure of reminding me she's asked me to listen to TS for years lol.
