she also called the album and the entire idea of her making an "indie" sounding record (still such a ridiculous classification....lol) lazy which is ridiculously unfair and discrediting to the hard work she and her collaborators obviously put into this record

I like this line from the RS review:

“If Lover was the last album of her twenties, Folklore is the first of her thirties.”

This is an odd comment and I dunno, I don't think it's necessary to make such comments. She's been huge for a long time so obviously there's going to be a lot of discussion when she drops a new album.

Maybe I’m missing them mark here because I’m still not all that sure about what indie “sounds” like (to me it’s always been more attitude/movement than indicative of sound), but I’ll try.

When Coldplay delved from stadium rock sounds of early albums into more art pop/indie soundscapes later on, we’re they critiqued for doing so? I’m thinking no, though maybe I’m misremembering or this isn’t an apt comparison at all.

Either way, I find the whole Taylor “ripping” indie artists idea dumb as fuck and potentially/most likely harmful discourse.

Anyways. Loving the album thus far. My favorite of hers since 1989.

it seems to me indie is being used as a stand in for the 'loner in the woods with an acoustic guitar' aesthetic. but to your point, if coldplay put out an album that sounded like for emma, forever ago, no i dont think they would be critiqued like this. although justin timberlake kind of was when he did the whole man of the woods thing. idk.

Taylor has a history of stripped back acoustic stuff though, Timberlake didn't, which makes it extra weird that she's being critiqued for it. Just because it's very slightly less poppy than her other stuff lol.

  13. I'm sorry I missed this! At any rate, my top 3 is probably Getaway Car, Call It What You Want and New Years Day. There are so many moods on that record so which ones I'll gravitate to changes pretty frequently though.

Man of the Woods, aside from being very bad, just wasn't what it was advertised to be. This was the perfect album for her to release how she did since no expectations could be made whatsoever.

I’m a fan of JT generally, that album just missed the mark. It was marketed as one thing which it... wasn’t, then it wasn’t even good on top of that.
Taylor has been (and probably always will be) criticized by some group or other no matter what she does.

I like all three of those songs a lot at this point. I listened to the album last night and again this morning and I honestly love about 2/3 of the album now, and it is pretty much exactly the last 2/3 of the album. Like if I just chop off the first several songs then I love the rest of the album. I'll keep trying though - maybe my appreciation for the rest of the album will help me get into the first part.

I can see now what everyone was always talking about when they said this album is loaded with bangers or bops or whatever. It is ridiculously fun. The three that you mentioned are all fantastic, "Dress" is f---ing amazing. Once Track 5 hits the only song I'm still not really crazy about at this point is "Gorgeous", and it's not bad, it's just that every other song around it is really damn good and enjoyable.

  21. (it's because they actually have little to no experience with her catalog and if they've ever heard anything of hers they liked they probably immediately internally assigned credit to the person standing closest to her at the time but you didn't hear it from me)

I have taken shit about this from literally everyone I have ever spoken to about this, but there are a couple of songs on Man of the Woods that I legitimately like a ton. I love "Montana". I can't even use the THERE ARE DOZENS OF US! meme because as far as I know I am the only one haha

The funny part of it all is that this album could very easily be classified as npr core or adult contemporary or whatever you want to call it these days as it can be indie. Others have said it already, but outside of a couple very Natiionally guitar flourishes and the lack of bangers (for lack of a better word) this isn't a giant departure or evolution, it's just good.
