That song and mirrorball have convinced me I do indeed want Jack to produce a Phoebe album

I don’t think I’m doing a good job of articulating what I’m trying to say, so I’ll just say that I agree with you. And one of the nice things about the streaming era is how easy it is to consume all the different albums that come out on a given day, so it’s cool when people take the time to really dig into new releases.

i mean, that's just not true. sure, preorders are important, but your album release day is when coverage and word of mouth are at an inflection point.

  5. Small to medium bands aren't making money off their recorded music, I'm sorry to say.

After one full listen this is... just.... something else. I do think we needed the last three albums for her to get here.

I think his point is that coverage and word of mouth on release day can lead to more money through exposure and then ticket sales...but...seeing as how the majority of artists that size make the most money from touring and we’re in the middle of a global pandemic right now...yeah hard to see how increased coverage even leads to a monetary gain in the current climate

Only heard a bit of this while driving today and it was all fantastic. I’m overwhelmed by new music from the last couple weeks and I’m really happy to say that.

your release day isn't just about people hearing your music, it's about the attention generated by your album and how that translates to building a monitizable audience. and you know that.

come on dude, you hate it when other people argue against something you're not saying. stop doing it to me.

as someone who can literally see trends in how merch and bundle sales (including both smallest artists and taylor swift) bunch around release days... a lot.

your release day is one of your biggest opportunities to get new fans to learn about you. i'm done arguing this.

yes I understand release days are good for building exposure. I’m wondering how much of that really translates to monetary gains in the current climate

  18. Maybe, I just don't know which artists are all of a sudden getting, on one day only, all this extra coverage that is goin to lead to something like that. For small/medium artists it should all be sustained continual push, I think the idea of "one day" pushing the chips in to try and capitalize and then being upset that another bigger artist is getting all the "talk" on that day, doesn't really ring true to be because if I was going to write about/post about your album today, I'm still going to do it, regardless of the Taylor album coming out, and if I wasn't, I wasn't going to anyway. I dunno.

Oh yeah I 100% agree and think too much attention is paid to the single day of release or even the first week of release.

I would probably chalk that up to some of the producers she's worked with (outside of the huge singles). Like just do you and we'll figure it out from there. The growth is insane. Especially crazy to hear when I consistently have her debut in rotation on my running playlists.

If I'm arguing against something you're not saying, I don't know what you're saying then, and I'm sorry.

But, to the broader point, I think the idea of smaller artists building around, or counting on, an album release day is a bad strategy to monetize a band. I think it worked better when albums were coming out in stores and there wasn't infinite music available at any given time. But that's not the reality anymore.

I know this has that explicit tag, but I feel like that would've been in a whole other league!!!

All kidding aside though, I love how direct her vocals feel on this. I think the swearing feels very naturalistic on this given what she's singing about and the swearing plays into that idea for me.

Or I just swear too much.

the worst take i’ve seen so far is that there isn’t anything interesting in the music on the record
