  1. it doesn't even make sense.

who woke up today thinking "oh man can't wait to spin that Tomberlin record! oh shit there's a new Taylor Swift record? Never listening to Tomberline again!"

  2. like what is folklore taking away from at the wedding?

I mean you can’t deny that when an album like this comes out—one that totally commands the discourse on and surrounding release day—most coverage that isn’t about it will get buried. I’m not saying thousands of people would be repping Liza Anne if it weren’t for Taylor, but it’s going to be way harder to get people to spend time with that album today when this one exists. That’s all I’m saying.

  5. Small artists shouldn't even be thinking about what bigger artists are doing, it should be irrelevant to their entire strategy of building a fanbase and releasing music. There will be, every week, an album (or ten) that is massively more popular than your album. Those smaller albums wouldn't have gotten the coverage Taylor's getting in the world this isn't out today, because they're smaller albums, with a smaller fanbase, with fewer people talking about them.

And to the last point, no artist should be trying to monetize on one day only, if you do that, you're dead. If your strategy to make it as an artist is the one day Bandcamp doesn't take a cut, you're gonna need a new income strategy, yesterday.

The shitty thing is, prior to reading that thread I did not think about Tomberlin at all in relation to this album. Now whenever I see Tomberlin, I am going to think about that dumbass take

illicit affairs sounds like something, specifically production wise, off Punisher.

Love being able to compare Phoebe Bridgers and Taylor Swift.

Yeah, it’s weird to see Katie Dey (Could be a joke) tweeting about Taylor. Her fans are going to listen to her regard regardless of what drops that day. There was 10000% going to be a record out today that sold more than hers.

it's entirely realistic that they tour together at some point.

This is a better way of articulating my point. I’m coming at it strictly from the viewpoint of an artist. If I had an album coming out today and then found out a Taylor album was dropping I’d definitely be a little disappointed. But that doesn’t mean Taylor did anything wrong or should have changed anything about her rollout!

  16. Eh, I'd argue this is more so a byproduct of capitalism. And this experience translates to most 'jobs' in a similar way, because of it.

  18. I disagree. Fans who are excited about one of their artists releasing new music won't care what else is releasing.

I've listened to the new Gulch and Acacia Strain records more today than I have Taylor - folklore didn't change my listening habits at all

  19. Then I don't know what you mean by "today is one of the biggest chances for hundreds of smaller-but-market-viable artists to monetize their last year and a half of work and continue to build their audience."
