Don Giovanni has been on a crusade about “teams” behind artists and how insidious they are for like months. This is the midpoint in a looooooong rant.

It's almost like they're a music based publication or something.........

People like the Don Giovanni person seem convinced that every song Taylor puts out was concocted in a test tube. I’m not even a big Taylor fan generally speaking and I know that’s bullshit.

I just.....like Big Thief didn't sit in a fucking room and talk about what they wanted their record to sound like?

No he acknowledges that. Basically saying that even little artists that you think get there on their own have to be handpicked by teams and publications will never cover an artists that isn’t handled by someone they have a relationship with. How basically impossible it is to get coverage and exposure just off talent and quality. There’s some truth in it. He’s just chasing the wrong target now.

absolutely! that said, i'm not sure what the "right" space is. she's one of the biggest artists on the planet, it's a better way to spark a conversation than just doing it on a random friday.
did not have that info, thanks for the context.

yeah i mean...no secret the music industry is fucked from the bottom up and the way coverage is handed out to certain bands is massively unbalanced. but like i said, none of this starts or ends with taylor swift or this album so its definitely a weird target.

  12. Yeah, 'cause she's very popular and your mom knows her name, and most of the Bandcamp artists are barely known by most of the people that read my website and I post about them all the time. This argument makes no sense.

Nothing groundbreaking, but I love how she throws out the line "the greatest films of all time are never made" without giving any context first.

You're like, what the fuck is she talking about?and within the next verse or so she ties it together and it becomes relevant to the rest of the song.

I may have just recently liked or followed someone that got him dropped into my twitter feed. I’ve seen it a lot lately, but didn’t know it went way back

Anyway I decided on a whim to take up embroidering as a hobby this week and got all of my materials in the mail yesterday and I just wanted you all to know that sitting in the sun and embroidering leaves while listening to this album fucking rules.

I'll write you into all of my songs Supporter

it’s really bordering on conspiracy theory nonsense to make sense of why something is popular and financially viable and others are not....there’s inklings of truth to what he’s saying but it’s really missing the mark and taking it in the wrong direction

I don't get how you can listen to any Taylor Swift album and not think it's her distinctive songwriting voice guiding everything. You don't have to like her but the idea that it's a bunch of suits writing these songs or whatever people think is going on is literally laughable. The more I listen to this the more you hear just simply Taylor in there, something no one else can recreate or fake

  18. not to mention that a thoughtful review of a big album can draw in more readers who will potentially see that they're welcome into the world of the "indie press" or whatever and might then read about other, smaller bands. seems like antiquated punk stuff when I think the best thing to do (and what some of the best smaller pubs are doing) is say everything and everyone is welcome and should be given a serious consideration

  19. This made me laugh out loud.

Look, we're no where near as big as we once were, but I got over a million different people viewing my website last month and this is so fucking not true. Not when AP.net was giant, not when Chorus is whatever it is comparatively I don't even know anymore.

yeah, and i think that's a better counterargument: basically all of the major music publications have already incorporated trad-pop into their coverage, so what does it matter if she's playing in a sound that 10+ years ago might have made it more possible for her to get more attention?

that said, if she did this in the 2000s all those same indie blogs would have just gave her shit and terrible reviews rather than actually engaging with the music. so it's not like they were all "pure" anyway.
