see thats exactly the thing, this mentality is so prevalent among the suits in the industry its a real bummer when you see an artist regurgitating it as well

It’s fed by youtube and content-farm culture. I can’t tell you how many videos I see of “10 songs that RIPPED OFF other songs” because they have a similar chord progression.

Guys, music has been around a long ass time and there are only so many chords that sound good to the human ear and so many combinations you can put them in. Get a life.

It’s also tough because what constitutes plagiarism in lyrics? Using the same metaphors? Choosing the same topics or themes? Including similar motifs or symbols? Like, how many songs in the world reference something like “driving with the windows down” or “summer love” or use water as a metaphor? Originality doesn’t really exist in art, at least not the way we often pretend it does. It’s all about taking what you know and putting it into your own voice.

    friend sent me this:

Aaron Dessner introduced a generation of indie rock fans to the Dead, helped bring the weird out of Justin Vernon and now this, all while writing the music for one of the most successful bands of the 2000s. not many historical comps.

can I be honest in that I think what’s going on is that white female musicians are big mad today that they have to admit they’re more similar to Taylor than they like to admit. Its not cool to outright hate and insult her like it once was so they have to go the “obviously I respect her but clearly she is stealing from me and mine!” Route instead of respecting that she has always been adjacent (if not entrenched) to this sound/genre.

yeah she has songs from nearly all her records that could fit right in on this one if they were retooled to match her current level of maturity in her writing

there's a big thing going on with that right now in guitar youtube lol. a dude's video got blocked bc it showed him playing a solo for one of his collaborators albums that he wrote himself

and the collaborator isn't the one that blocked it. the radio station that debuted the song is. and they blocked it successfully lol. odd shit indeed.

  10. What a beautiful album, she’s knocked it out of the park. Initial favourites are betty, august, invisible string, this is me trying and my tears ricochet. Really excited to spend more time with this

I'm an idiot y'all. What does "if I'm dead to you then why are you awake" mean?

"August" is a perfect application of the Swift/Antonoff soaring pop song filtered through the autumnal, contemplative mood she's living in on this album

    just wonderful

  13. people really showing their ass online today (as expected) by acting like Taylor has never dabbled in the indie aesthetic on prior albums (just off the top of my head look at "It's Nice to Have a Friend" for example goddamn)

half the reason red is my favorite record is because "all too well" alone is exactly the kind of emotional indie shit i was into in 2012

I'll write you into all of my songs Supporter

It really irks me because it takes away some of the humanity of some of these artists. Which is something that Taylor's needed to deal with her entire life. She's had to defend her being as if every move is calculated and her precision is either disingenuous or ripping off another artist. Why is she not allowed to have genuine appreciation for some of these smaller bands just because she's a major mainstream artist? That "gatekeeping" is immature and ridiculous. Taylor doesn't need defending but I'm over thinking like that.

i will say i am seeing much more love for this album than detractors, as is often the case with her. as polarizing as some of her releases have seemed (and this is coming from someone who doesnt enjoy lover or reputation), she moves units every single album and her fan base continues to grow every cycle.

    New favorite production detail:

The Leslie guitar that sneaks in for just two fuckin’ great licks in the “Betty” bridge

another reason why the lazy argument doesnt stick. this could've easily been a one dimensional indie folk record that basically did what you would expect. instead, there is an enormous amount of depth in the compositions and production, its going to be a treat on repeated listens to pick up new things.

Oh god yeah. As a musician I’m chasing like 13 great production details per song like a mouse in the fuckin’ cheese section.
