Someone asked her to be more specific and she said just google the lyrics and you'll see. Like... what?

Not a single weak track here, but Exile -> Ricochet -> Mirrorball is just fucking electric.

    What an album.

What lyrics/songs is Tomberlin referencing when she mentions Taylor’s twist on “lyrics that already exist”? Anyone know?

hmmm looking at some tomberlin lyrics on genius right now and that's one hell of a reach. from what ive picked up folklore is just the natural evolution of taylor's writing style, just switching from being hyperfocused on herself to something more narrative driven.

Have listened to that Tomberlin album many times and do not see lyrical plagiarism anywhere but okay.

I didn’t think it was possible to find a new infuriating Taylor discourse but I guess the convo is going to be “stealing indie music” as if that can be done.

im also of the belief that great art is created by borrowing from stuff you like....artists who put up walls by, for example, not clearing samples or calling copycat when something takes inspiration are simply being anti-art and setting a really poor precedent for creating.

  9. Re: tomberlin, always bugs me when people act like lyrics are the song. I loved this record on first listen and could maybe tell you like two or three lines on the whole thing total lol. There’s so much else going on here, the audacity that it’d take to write the whole thing off due to a few (unjustified) lyrical similarities is profoundly silly

  11. "This is Me Trying" is the one that I'm finding myself connecting with the most right now. That little vocal melody combined with the storytelling aspect is pulling at my heartstrings. I don't want to be the cliche and say that this version of "indie" music somehow makes Taylor "better" because she's had her hands in this kinda music all over her career, and I (obviously) adore all her records, but there's something about her mirroring the kinda music I usually reach for with her talents that sparks something in me here. 1) It's like ok, god damn you're better at this than people that only do this, 2) It kinda reminds me a little of John Mayer's Born & Raised, in as much as it was an artist going completely in on a sound and knocking it out of the park.

Legendary, high-quality, stuff right here. More thoughts later.

Lol accusing someone of stealing lyrics and telling people to “google it” instead of providing the evidence you claim to be looking at is just oof

The only songwriter to win the Nobel borrows, steals, and half-remembers more than anyone in the game. Great art cannot exist in a vacuum.

and the irony of Dessner making the music for 60% of this album... did he steal from... himself? Taylor isn't the only person who made this album.

  15. right, like if an artist can’t create art based on the art they were inspired by then wtf are we even doing here lol

I love that Tomberlin record, and I truly mean no disrespect when I say this, but there is no fucking way that Taylor Swift has listened to it, let alone intentionally copied it

this is the same argument I have seen in facebook threads from aggressive anti-maskers and shit like that, they tell you to go google it instead of providing any actual sources or info

i guess the argument is, and ive seen more than just tomberlin say this, dessner is there for "indie cred" which....sorry one of the biggest artists in the entire world and history of music does not need to be making moves for any sort of "cred," thats a ridiculous notion

Breaking news: Aaron Dessner files lawsuit against Aaron Dessner, claiming “Peace” is a ‘total rip-off’ of Big Red Machine.

You joke but there’s legal precedent for this when John Fogerty’s CCR label sued him because his solo music sounded too much like himself.

Specifically that “Old Man Down the Road” plagiarized from “Run Through the Jungle”

yeah, that was my takeaway too. she's dabbled in narrative songwriting before and she played with more muted sonics on some of Lover, but this whole project is so remarkably good for someone supposedly "out of her element" that it's shocking. i hope the already massive success of this album opens up a feeling for her that she can more completely commit to a sustained mood on future projects rather than offering all kinds of music to all fans.
