"Last Kiss" at 149 is a fucking crime. NME is a terrible publication, though, so no big surprised there. Also, I like "Last Great American Dynasty" and "Cardigan" both a lot, but there is no way either of them touches a Taylor top five. The recency bias of this list is pretty wild to me. The Zayn song at 45 is also a hilariously awful take.
In general, I find "rank all the songs from X artist" features to serve essentially no purpose other than shining a light on how terrible some people's opinions are.
An editor probably should have stopped the writer from using the word “weepy” to describe literally every slow song. I also think covers shouldn’t be on lists like this!
I had this same exact gripe, haha. I know a hazard of writing a lot of blurbs is that you sometimes repeat yourself without realizing it, but it definitely seems like something someone should have caught.
Skimmed through, my immediate thoughts: - I Did Something Bad is not only ranked low, but it's the lowest ranking Reputation song? GTFO. - That Long Live ranking is criminal - God please remove all the covers from the list - This is Me Trying not even in the top 100? Urghhhh - Why am I still reading this? It's such a garbage ranking - Urgh False God and Treacherous should be higher - Hold up, The Lakes is ranked 65? The most forgettable song from folklore?? - Alright, Exile at #20, I'm cool with that - Clean at #16. A top 5 for me personally, but glad it's got a high ranking - The Last Great American Dynasty at #2?!? Seriously people what am I missing? That is a bottom 2 song on folklore for me - It's universally accepted that All Too Well is her best song and I love it.
Breaking news: it's impossible to form consensus about the ranking of every song of any artist. These articles are designed to get people arguing and clicking the link aren't they?!
My issue with this one is that it does a really bad job of making the case for its own rankings. A bunch of lazy one or two-sentence blurbs filled with meaningless adjectives like "weepy" and "breathless." There's no beyond-surface-level exploration for why the highly-ranked songs are good or why the low-ranked songs are not good. Like, I honestly could not tell you why this person thinks "All Too Well" is a masterpiece and "Last Kiss" is one of Taylor's worst songs.
I stopped paying attention when she put "I Did Something Bad" at 147 and then I exited the tab when I saw how dirty she did "Come Back... Be Here" And I'm not gonna talk about "Last Kiss" being called "plodding"
Same but with Hayley Williams instead of Phoebe (Phoebe still top 10 though, and Hayley is like right there behind folklore)
I get why this is a fall album to people, I mean it is definitely a "fall" album. But some albums are so good they transcend seasons and this is one of them. Plus I'm still very much not sick of it so it will still get plenty of love the next couple months. (And I Did Something Bad is a top 5 personal Taylor song so I won't be reading this list)
Random thought; Justin Vernon's royalties from his "Exile" feature must be pretty sweet going forward, haha. Should do well to support whatever tours/albums he does going forward.
Way too many reputation songs above folklore songs, and the reputation songs are wildly placed even amongst themselves
I opened up that ranking, viewed it for like 2 minutes, and quickly realized how garbage it was, so I closed the tab
Eh. After all the splits he's probably made more on his own stuff. I'd love to see his royalty statements though. With all the random collaborators (Kanye, Taylor, James Blake, Francis + The Lights) it's probably fun to see them all laid out.
At the moment that's probably true; "Exile" is at 95 million Spotify streams at the moment, after about a month and a half of being out. His own catalog though is doing pretty well; 7.1 million monthly listeners too. Still, I'd say sometime next year "Exile" will easily be his most streamed track
So what is her "worst" song? Is there enough "hate" towards Bad Blood and End Game? For me I'm ok never listening to Better Than Revenge.
I don't hate "I Did Something Bad" the song, but I do absolutely loathe how it's produced. It's kind of my problem with Reputation in microcosm: good songs marred by ridiculously overblown, heavy-handed production choices. It's the exact moment when I decided I'd be okay if she never worked with Max Martin and Shellback ever again. I think her worst song is "ME!" though. Just an absolutely abominable piece of shit.
