I think “in front of all your stupid friends” is one of my favorite lines on the album. Something about her delivery is a lot of fun
I call that a "Taylor Smiler." It's when you can tell she's smiling when she sings the lyrics. She does it A LOT.
Weird how barely any of those reaction videos make a focus on the music itself; usually they speak solely on the lyrics. For me music is almost the #1 thing I notice first over any lyrics
Oh yea...like those drums/beats/claps that kick off the first track. My head bob starts unconsciously nearly every time.
For sure. I think a lot of it has to with Taylor sorta being known as a storyteller in her songwriting. But yeah generally speaking, lyrics are usually fall behind instrumentation and production in terms of things I instinctively pay attention to when listening to new music, and that’s something I frequently feel pretty alone in
I am a lyrics-first person 100 percent of the time, so this doesn’t seem that strange to me—especially for Taylor, who has always been a lyrics-first songwriter.
I am music first too. If I like how a song sounds I will then dive into the lyrics/try and learn them, but that usually doesn't happen for me on first or even second listen.
Interesting how people can approach music from completely opposite sides. My most favorite piece of music ever is an ambient/orchestral piece, so music itself hits me deep when it connects. Tracks like Mirrorball, Exile, and This Is Me trying are my favorite tracks mainly because of the music contained in each, especially Mirrorball. But as I've paid more attention to this lyrics on this record, especially seeing people in reaction videos talk about them, I've become even more impressed with the record
Additionally, going through playlists on Spotify, if I don't like the sound/music of a track within 15-20 seconds, then most of the time I'll skip the track.
Yeah there’s some stuff I like more for the writing but...it has to get me there musically to be able to process and appreciate the writing.
The big exceptions being things I KNOW are so well written that I’ll eventually come around. Getting into Leonard Cohen was a conscious choice I made. I just...decided to. And then I kept listening until I liked it.
Second to instrumentation I’m pretty big on production too. Like, not a snob or anything, but I latch on to things like panning and various tones (guitars, drums, etc.) pretty quickly. The mix and effects and all that
yeah i feel like lyrics are more often reductive for me. really bad lyrics make me like something less when i eventually get around to them. really good lyrics are nice but more often than not there’s already other stuff i like enough to draw me in. you don’t often find awful lyrics with great music and great lyrics with awful music. they kind of go hand in hand haha
It’s definitely interesting! My brother-in-law is totally a music first guy, to the point where he doesn’t care about lyrics really at all. I can’t wrap my head around that personally, but whatever moves you, right? For me, if a song is good from a lyrical/melodic perspective, it will usually work in any musical presentation. Good arrangements, playing, or production choices can all elevate that, but they are rarely the main attractions for me.
There are enough bad versions of “Hallelujah” out there for me to know this is not necessarily how my brain works. You can butcher great writing
I used to care about lyrics way more when I was younger. I still pay attention to them but it’s definitely music first now.
