Taylor Swift - folklore (July 24, 2020) Album • Page 108

  1. That's insane haha

  2. Big fan of the lyrical move where an artist sings a part twice but holds out on the last line the first time. In hoax when she comes through with that “but what you did was just as dark” it’s just like ahhhhhh my heart

where would i be if i was my brain Prestigious

I just think she's handled some of the Kanye stuff just as messy as his handling of stuff towards her. I find the parts directed at Kanye are out of place on an otherwise great song.

Really? I honestly don't know what from the song could even be considered messy or scathing, it's pretty tame... I also don't feel comfortable criticizing a woman for responding to the terrible things a man did to her in real life, by singing about it.

I perfectly understand the context and have spent more time thinking about their relationship and its socio-cultural connotations than I'd like.

That fact remains that both times in her discography, she sings about a black man in his 30s and 40s in a way that treats him like a child. Even putting his mental health challenges aside, it's something that currently doesn't sit right with me when I hear it.

EDIT: Upon reading Anna's piece, this paragraph is significant to what I'm saying above:

It looks like that co-sign from Taylor grew this person's twitter following by almost 70,000. Insane.

"Don't call me kid, don't call my baby" - loveeeeee that passage of the song, with the layered vocals in the background

gotta say I really don’t care what any white person (or any person) says about Kanye vs Swift, especially in the year 2020

this album resists any attempt at ranking its tracks because each serves a purpose in the overall flow, which is impeccable, best sequencing of her career, etc. etc. but

    invisible string
    the 1
    august
    seven
    mirrorball
    illicit affairs
    peace
    my tears ricochet
    betty
    cardigan
    the last great american dynasty
    this is me trying
    mad woman
    epiphany
    hoax
    exile

    that was unsatisfying

Really enjoy and appreciate everyone’s attempt at ranking the songs. I can’t bring myself to do it, but it does seem like I’m lower on august than the consensus and higher on mad woman. Always fun to see how my thoughts differ from others.
