  1. Right?? Just found it a couple months ago when doing mid-year ranking. Even if you don’t find it’s completely “accurate”, it’s a great starting point

what does a single being released even mean these days? It gets added to the mos popular playlist on the streaming services?

“Impacting radio” is the term used usually. Matters less since radio isn’t as predominant but ya know.

If it means my middle aged mom hears it going to and from stop & shop that’s important

I'm going to listen to all the Aaron Dessner songs today, then after a break all the Jack songs. Interested to listen for the production differences/similarities.

I honestly knew who did each song during my first play through.. but to be fair, I listen to a lot of Dessner material.

I mean, I could guess which were which, but it'll still be fun to listen to them as two pieces. I've done that with the Jack tracks on Lover and reputation too, it makes for an interesting little listen through

yeah, one or two of the jack songs kinda blur the lines a bit but most of them are pretty obvious

  14. I was surprised to find out mirrorball was a Jack song but the rest were pretty easy

I don't think Jack would've blended in nearly as well on this a few years ago. If they tried to do this when they were writing reputation I think the production styles would've clashed a lot more, so it's cool that they sound so good together here.

It's obviously impossible to guess, but you also have to remember that Melodrama was the same year as reputation. Sober II, Writer in the Dark, Liability & Reprise... I think it would easily have been possible for him and Taylor to pull it off if they both were in the headspace they are now.

but it's all hypothetical, neither of them were making folklore in 2017, there was no virus, etc etc etc

This list loses all credibility with the last great american dynasty being where it is.

You make a point, but even those Melodrama songs feel different to me. They're either full piano ballads, which is a different thing, or have a really cinematic feel. They still sound big, even though they're ballads. In this, it's kind of the opposite. There's some restraint to even a song like august which feels like the biggest bop. But you're also probably right that saying he couldn't have isn't true, more just that it's not what he was doing then. Love the growth

I don't think I've ever seen a greater range of rankings lol.

Definitely feels like an album where every week a couple of songs will be new favorites

The songs that I didn't think about as much at first are starting to get more attention from me now too (hoax, peace, epiphany, illicit affairs, mad woman). There really is not a song I would cut

I love "the last great american dynasty" but it always reminds me of those memes where they're like "and that little girl? It was me!" when she says that she bought the house.

I'm inclined to agree with the similarities between Melodrama and this record. In particular, there's a strong connection in instrumentation and chord progressions/functions in "The Louvre" and "this is me trying". Of course differences exist, but I'm with you that Jack likely could have pulled it off then if it's a place Taylor wanted to go. He's an artist's producer in my opinion and has been very good at following and executing their vision for sometime.
