Yeah I tried listening again and it's hard to resist turning it off before I get to the fourth song, definitely improves from that point on though.
It’s not as immediate as Out of the Garden but I’m quite liking this. Clipping is my favorite track so far.
I love Out of the Gardens but man... this record bores the hell out of me. It’s a gigantic bummer and I don’t see myself spinning the limited edition vinyl I preordered either.
Came back to this for the first time in a while tonight and I like it more than ever. Song One, Clipping, Just You, Underwear, Queen of New York, and Strawberry Selfish are all great songs.
I revisited this album last month and ended up listening to it multiple times a day for like two weeks straight. I think I might like it more than Out of the Garden now and I really enjoyed that release. Excited to spend some time with these acoustic renditions!
Never really gave myself a proper chance to come around on this. It’s still on my shelf, I’ll put it on again soon. Maybe 2 1/2 years (jfc what is time) is what I needed
I’m a HUGE fan of Out Of The Garden but Nightstand just didn’t work at all for me. I think I liked maybe three songs tops and ended up selling my limited edition vinyl on discogs. I hope her next record is more in the vein of Garden.
I really love the first three Tancred records, but this one hasn’t stuck with me at all, apart from “Reviews”. OOTG really showcases Jess’ knack for writing hooks, ear for melody, grasp on song structure, and sharp lyricism. It also has a sense of urgency that helps cover its weaker moments. Nightstand is fine, but so much of it feels rote, and production is kind of dry, which also doesn’t help. Considering what came right before, it feels like a loss of momentum. Regardless, I’m excited to listen the acoustic versions of these songs & see what different life is brought into them.
That should be fun. And for $5? Why not. I wonder which cuts she’ll pull from her first couple Tancred records. Aside from “The Ring” and “Indiana”, I don’t think she’s played anything pre-OOTG since 2014.
I wasn't able to see the stream, any setlist? Finally listening to the acoustic Nightstand, this is my absolute favorite album of hers and I love these versions
