Based on the teaser for the planned sequel, I'm fairly confident the hand we saw at the end was the other hand.

somehow didn't ever consider the obvious thought there were two hands lol, that rules. we don't even see what happens to the original though do we? it's just in Mia's room

  6. I mean I was watching through my fingers but what I saw scared me very little.

  7. Yeah, not a personal attack, but liek, good horror doesn't have to be "scary"

    scary is also extremely subjective

  9. Saw this again. It's so fucking good ughh

Mia holds out her left hand at the end. They're credited as people in Greece.

We don't know for sure if Riley actually saw Mia's mom. Or if Mia did. The spirits could've been manipulating her the entire time.

We don't know where the other hand is. Or what it does.

I’m almost certain Riley saw her mom. The way he looks at Mia before letting the spirit in says it all.

  11. I saw it that way at first, too, but this time I saw it as him looking to her for comfort, at that point his sister had left the room.

When Mia first let the spirits in I think they were saying how Riley looked appealing. It's like they wanted him from the beginning

What Mia's mom told her and what her dad read to her don't match, so either one of them is lying, or Mia's mom never actually made contact.

  13. also I thiiink whenever Mia talks to her "mom" you can hear a lot of watery sounds in the background. remember how the first spirit she let in looked like they died from drowning?

yeah I don't think Mia's mum ever appeared in the movie at all, it's the drowned woman impersonating her the whole time

This was solid especially for a first time feature. Interesting premise and some good scares but eh probably wouldn’t care to watch it again.

Didn’t love this, unfortunately, which is a shame because I really thought I was going to after the first 1/4, which was really great, and a premise that seemed tailor made to my tastes. Once the focus is on Mia, I not only found myself losing interest but actively disliked a lot of the choices. Mia’s whole backstory and trauma felt derivative and borderline irresponsible or something.

Seeing it a second time, it really worked for me, especially if you just take it as the drowned dead person she first encounters is the same one she’s encountering throughout the movie, that it’s just a nasty spirit continuously messing with her.

that's 100% the case, I'm surprised people didn't pick up on that

It’s definitely the drowned dead woman the whole time. Whenever you see “Mia’s mom” there are always water sounds and you can see her visibly changing as the film wears on because she’s losing her power in this realm. They’re told that you have to “ride it out” because they will eventually lose their strength and connection altogether. If you look closely at the very end when “Mia’s mom” has her hands on Mia’s shoulders and says “we will take care of him” or whatever, you can see that she’s looking pretty bloated because the guise is wearing off.

It seems like she was working with the old man to fool Mia in order to take Riley. They want him from the beginning, so the drowned lady makes sure to keep Mia past the 90 seconds in order to possess her. Then she uses Mia to tell Riley about what an “amazing” experience the process is to really hype it up to him. After he falls asleep that first night and Mia removes his earbuds, you then see the drowned woman’s hand reaching toward him. So the next time they’re all playing the game together, Riley sees how much “fun” they’re having, and it’s Mia who pushes for him to have a chance. Then the old man possesses Riley, pretends to be Mia’s mother in order to get Mia to keep Riley beyond the agreed upon 50 seconds, and then takes hold of him completely. He tries to kill him immediately so that he can take Riley’s soul forever. He’s unsuccessful and instead lands in the hospital where he’s strapped down so that he can’t use Riley’s body to kill him, and thus begins to deteriorate in strength because too much time is passing. So the spirits then decide to use Mia to trick her into thinking she needs to kill Riley to “save him”. She’s a full blown addict at this point so she buys into the deception. It’s not until the end when the drowned woman switches from saying “I will watch over Riley” to “we” that Mia has a sudden realization that she’s been duped.

My only questions are 1.) did Mia throw herself into traffic in order to sacrifice herself in place of Riley, or was it that Jade reached her in time and pushed her?

And 2.) Was that vision of the “hell” Riley was being tortured in real or was that also a part of their deception to fool Mia? I feel like it could go either way, but then if you came out of that comatose state back to the real world after like a week of being endlessly tortured in hell I really don’t know how you’d be a fully functioning human being.

That all being said, I think my biggest issue I have with the movie as a whole is its muddled messaging at the end there. Like the whole thing is very clearly an allegory for drug addiction, but if the “heroic” final act on Mia’s part is to commit suicide to save her friends and family from herself then I don’t feel great about that.

so despite having issues with this movies, it must have scared me more than i thought because last night in bed a character in the book i'm reading said "let me in" and my brain literally tried averting my gaze from those words

Just finished this earlier tonight. Brutal and difficult to watch at times, but also really creative and took so many unexpected turns. My wife says she hated it and that it was too upsetting, but I definitely enjoyed it haha. Some great analyses here, too.

The Hereditary comparison is inevitable but I think this has its own identity.
