I'm also waiting until Friday to see them live. It helps build up the hype some more for me. For the record, I have no problem with Twenty-Surgery either. That song rules, I love that post-chorus.
“El Paso” rips live and the only reason I can think of for the relatively lukewarm crowd reception is maybe bc its sound/ vibe is quite different from the band’s other songs, even their other heavier tracks
they should play a Terrible Things song actually. Fred and Josh Eppard are right there in the building together
Regardless of how people feel about New Again, I hope most can agree that Carpathia is a really solid song. Probably my favorite on the album along with EMG
I think it’s unfair to judge TAYF without proper cultural context. The impact that album had is way more important than it’s quality as an album.
They sound so much better tuned down - it's wild. I wonder if anyone has suggested it over the years and if so why they didn't do it?
The Live at Bamboozle album (2009) is all Half a step down.. I figured that out when I was playing along to it with my guitar and Adam sounds incredible on that... I feel like once Fazzi left they stopped trying to sound technically good live and just wanted standard tuning vibes over downtuned solidarity.
They started tuning down a half-step when they were recording Louder Now, so I guess they just got comfortable with it, and it became an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” situation both live and in studio. I think they should’ve tuned down again around the time they were touring on Tidal Wave, and definitely during the 20th anniversary shows.
gotcha. so I guess we were already a half step down in the Fazzi years and stayed there until this tour so now they are a full step down?
Basically yep, they started playing and recording a half step down from Louder Now onwards. They did go back to standard for most of Tidal Wave, at least in the studio. MakeDamnSure is played even lower now as it's one and half step down.
Snippet of 20/20 Surgery, sounds great https://www.reddit.com/r/takingbacksunday/comments/1mv2a23/twenty_twenty_surgery_chicago_081925/
Heard they played it again last night/the setlist was the same as the Indy one. Three shows isn't a large sample size by any means, but knowing TBS, I can't imagine their setlist varies too much. Possibly one song gets changed from time to time, but it wouldn't surprise me if El Paso showed up irregularly in the amphitheater setting.
Adam is also really edited on that live recording for what it's worth. I'm pretty sure they had to go in and re-record some parts too because I was at that Bamboozle, and I remember it was during the time Adam was singing Beyonce lyrics during Decade and being a little disappointed that the version on the recording did not have that and instead had the actual lyrics. (Though I can understand why it didn't).
i was at that Bamboozle and remember all the extra lyrics (specifically Skinny Love during Cute Without the E), but also remember Adam sounding especially good that day.
Honestly, I remember the lyrics parts more than the actual sound but knowing that a lot of that was removed, it feels like a reasonable assumption that the sound was tweaked too. I think Fazzi implied this once both about this release and Orensanz. What I mainly remember from this day is getting a promotional beach ball, being very wet and miserable, and Bo Burnham playing in a tent.
