From what I’m reading they brought Fred out during the 3rd song and he played for the rest of the set.

Did John leave during the set or something? I don't see him in that video

    Are You Watching Closely?

Bad camera work. He stayed to the left of Fred from the looks of other videos

Didn't think I'd ever see Fred on the same stage as John. What a beautiful point in time. Thank you Mark for making this possible.

tbs had three touring guitarists until Eddie officially left in 2017 or whatever… Nathan has been with them since 2010 and probably gets paid a touring wage (and helps set up and break down the TBS stage on their smaller shows), and I would also assume that whatever Mitch is getting paid is not the same as what Mark earned as a full time member of the band (and again, Mitch helps with stage set up and break down). If they stay officially as a three-piece for the business aspect of TBS, I reckon they could reasonably afford to pay three touring members if they wanted to. They might not be playing the same size rooms as they did in 2008, but considering how frequently they do sell out the rooms they play, I don’t think they’re destitute.

This setlist is kind of boring and unimpressive after seeing what was played at recent festivals. They played things like El Paso, beat up car, you can’t look back, and lightbringer at those sets. Tonight was very generic, and that feels like a missed opportunity. If you’re going to figure out how to rework songs to allow for three guitarists and a fourth vocalist (Nathan was really coming through the mic tonight), it would’ve been cool to se some songs that don’t get played as often. Even if they happened to be different Louder Now or Where You Want to Be songs for the sake of Fred vocals.

After seeing the John and Adam iteration of the band many times over the past few years, it was very weird hearing Fred sing on the songs even if he is on the recording, but it’s possible that this particular festival’s atmosphere (it was Patchogue, which feels self-explanatory) took away from what I enjoy most about TBS shows. I would be curious to see how this goes in a club show environment because that’s where TBS shines the most and my main complaint is that it didn’t have the chemistry that a tbs show typically does.

unsurprised to see people on the internet mad that they’re tuning down now, and some of the comments regarding John and Nathan needing to go to bring back Fred are downright awful, but I suspected this would be the case when this was first floated as a possibility. People are thinking/hoping this is more than what it likely will be and will ultimately be disappointed because no matter what it turns out to be, it won’t ever live up to what is in their head.

Kind of embarrassing, in my opinion, for people to be holding onto 2002-2006 (heavy emphasis on 2006 for Louder Now) for what taking back sunday is when the band has spent the 19 years since then writing, recording, and touring and building what they believe the band is. That’s a long time to be hoping a band will go back to a sound that they’re clearly trying not to replicate. But maybe in year 20, they’ll finally be right!

As someone who knows nothing about music production. Why does he suddenly not sound like shit? I know autotune etc etc, maybe just a good night. I keep seeing people say they’re playing a step down or whatever but idk wtf that means

  16. Playing a step down means that he doesn't have to sing as high, so he can sing maybe closer to his more comfortable register. Hopefully that makes sense!

Yeah, basically retunes the guitar to be two frets lower, while still playing on the same place on the guitar.

So, instead of standard tuning (EADGBE), a step down would be tuning the guitar down to DGCFAD

It’s because he just sings the lower octave and actually hits the notes

Kinda wild that we were all talking about Fred filling in for John on this tour nearly 8 months ago and they’re now just announcing it
